I always enjoyed prime lenses and I've always hoped Canon would make a wide angle small prime. Everything does not need to be L quality so I'm very excited to see the 16mm 2.8 coming. I can see this getting a lot of use. Just wondering if anyone else is as excited as I am for this?

I am. I was going to pick up a Rokonin 14mm RF for landscape, but if this 16 RF STM will do the trick for less of a price tag, I'm down. Hope to see some real world reviews ASAP!!!

I went ahead and pre-ordered. I can see the 16 and 800 making a nice kit for hiking.

That's actually an attractive lens for it's price since it covers a 35mm sensor.

Canon is finally catching up with the lenses only possible on mirrorless systems. Great!

Very best,

I was planning on selling my EF 16-35mm f/4 IS L and replacing it with the RF 14-35mm f/4. However, since I don't shoot a lot of ultra wide angle, this lens may make more sense paired with my existing RF 24-105mm f/4 L. It would be smaller, lighter and a lot less expensive.

I have no idea why Canon came with UWA @16mm. Which is not very common, practical focal length.

Meanwhile Canon has no 28mm prime in production in EF and RF. Which is very common FOV.

They should have release 40 RF pancake instead, which is another high demanded focal length.

I still want a 14-35 too if I could sell my 16-35

I got the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 today and haven't got to use it that extensively but so far I'm REALLY loving it! I've always dreamed of a 16mm prime and this has been a dream lens for me so really happy it's finally released. .

I pre-ordered too but mine still says backordered. I'd be interested to see more samples with this lens. Thanks

.

.
It depends entirely on the minimum focus distance and magnification ratio.

I really want / need a wide angle macro lens. . I mean true macro with at least a 1:1 magnification ratio. . There is a lens like that on the market, but at the moment I forget what brand and focal length. . But I am pretty sure it was a 3rd party offering, and that Canon didn't make a true macro in very short focal lengths like 15mm or 16mm.

If this new 16mm f2.8 is capable of true 1:1 macro, then it would be very exciting, and possibly compel me to buy my first RF mount mirrorless body!

If this new 16mm lens is not close to true macro capabilities, then I have no interest whatsoever. . The only use I have for such a wide focal length is to get it an inch or three away from reptiles and amphibians and butterflies and get dramatic looking environmental portraits. . Wide angle does nothing for me outside of this context.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Mine just arrived, I haven't even mounted it yet but I'm excited about how small and light it is. I watched some reviews and is does seem to have some issues with vignetting and distortion but hopefully it will be easily corrected.

Congrats! I find using in body corrections helps with a lot of it!
