This week's topic is Close (as in "close to my heart", not as in "close the door as you leave"). May be things close to each other, something big up close, or even macro close. Could also be a close call, too close to call, too close for comfort, or a close encounter of the third kind ... . All up to you.

This challenge begins when posted and ends on Monday, 4 October at midnight GMT. Winner of this challenge will be announced shortly thereafter.

Challenge Rules:

1. Camera: Any DIGITAL CAMERA is allowed, not just DSLR.
2. Time: Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size: Please visit Image Posting Rules.
4. Post Processing: Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting: ONE PHOTO per photographer per challenge. List camera model & lens used. Post brief EXIF data: ISO, shutter speed and aperture.
6. Commenting: No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Keep it clean, and both Family and Work safe.
8. Have questions, PM me.
9. Have lots of FUN!

* THE WINNER ALWAYS SETS THE THEME FOR THE NEXT CHALLENGE, POSTS IT AND JUDGES IT - BE PREPARED!

Past midnight - time to decide

Well this was a close competition in every way. A lot of looking back and forth on my part. Well done all.

Jerry and Don - very close, clear and attractive; good sense of depth.

Ed - cute, and you can save on pumpkins this Halloween.

Martin - very nice detail, colours and composition - and the water droplets. (Here in Newfoundland we call rowan berries, and the trees, "dog berries". Not sure why, because not even my beagles will eat them, and a beagle will eat pretty much anything. Though I have had a nice dry wine from them. And they're as useful as a groundhog for weather forecasts: a bumper crop of berries means a bumper crop of snow to come.)

Gav - also nice detail and arrangement. Like the skin textures especially. (Here in Newfoundland we call cherry tomatoes "cherry tomatoes". But I think that's Mr. Loblaws' fault.)

And my pick as winner this week is rwmson. Not quite sure what we're looking at but it looks up-close and personal, close together, and a little like a close encounter of some kind or other. Do like the colours and the overall effect.

Roger, please lead us on to # 676

Thanks Rob. I'm a little surprised that some of you haven't seen soap bubble photography before. It's interesting how the bubble starts out clear, then the colors form at the top and slowly spread downward. Then the top of the bubble turns clear and the colors slowly disappear in a downward direction. You can see that in my photo where the top third is washed out white and the colors are beneath it. I'll get another competition started later today.
