There are quite a lot of castles up there. Something to do with troublesome neighbours

Some Roman bloke built a bloody great wall across the top of England to keep them out but it didn't work right well

Oh my word!! That would be quite the hike to get UP to the Lindisfarne Castle. Too much HIKING for this old boy!

No escalator to take me to the top?? <grin>

Cragside House,. Once owned bt Lord Armstrong. He made his fortune manufacturing armaments. It was the fist house in the world to have hydro-electric lighting. An incredibly interesting place to visit

This is part of the posh bit

And the not so posh 'erks' bit, the kitchen

Armstrong had lifts put in for the servants so that they didn't have to carry heavy stuff like buckets of coal up to the higher floors and the long hooks over the kitchen fire are hydraulic rotisseries for cooking the meats.

WOW! That fireplace is so elegant! I cannot imagine how in the world that huge fireplace was even built!!

Just think of trying to hike up there when the folks at the top are EXTREMELY unwelcoming Charles!

Or even better, try this one

It had a very bloody history thanks to pope Innocent III and the Albigensian Crusade.

If I remember correctly it was designed and built by an Italian bloke in Italian marble. Quite overpowering to stand by it!

We went up there on an August bank holiday day Charles. The temperature was in the mid 30s C and we had only gone there for a drive out to see what it was like from the bottom, then from a little way up and then, "oh sod it, lets keep on going" and by the time we had reached we. all 3 including our labrador, were on our elbows! But it was worth it when we could stand up again.

The Languadoc has a really bloody and interesting history. I was never interested in history at school, but I loved it there and the history of the Cathars.

This is about them and the crusade https://en.wikipedia.org …sade#Massacre_at_Béziers (external link)
