You could also rent a pricey lens for a week for a fraction of ownership price.

I had a 17-40, it was ok, but I eventually got rid of it and went to third party prime lenses.

Some friends of mine invited me on a city walking tour. Soon. So I was in a hurry to get this lens.
I did some research, it does have some deficits. But I believe it will work for me.
And if it doesn't, I can sell it for almost what I paid.

Looking forward to the lens! :-)

In 2014 I bought the 17-40 L as I just bought my first full frame at Christmas in 2013. Worked great. Small lighter package to the heavier one stop faster 16-35 f/2.8 II at double the price. A few months later, the 16-35 f/4L IS was introduced. Yes sharper corner to corner, improved color and IS. As I bracket in old cathedrals Hand Held, the IS is key. However the images I captured with the 17-40 were what was available at that time. If waiting to capture available funds would be several months down the road, you are fortunate to have the 17-40 L….. now.
Enjoy your new lens. By the way I still have my 17-40.

This is what I would have gotten, if I wanted to shoot the wall murals that you described in the opening post. But I see that you already bought a zoom lens. I hope it serves you well!

I have the EF-M 12mm f2 version of that lens, and it is really quite nice, I also have their 50 1.2, which is again a very nice lens.

Thanks Tom, I did see these before. But I'm an AF kind of guy, so I passed on these.

I'm curious, what didn't you like about it?

Eventually, I'll buy the R5. The new RF 14-35 looks very attractive. But the R5 and lens with grip, cards, and extra batteries exceeds $6k.
With shoulder surgery soon this isn't a good time to buy into the R system. My 6D and EF lenses will do for now.

If you do buy an R5 the RF 24-240 is a very good walk around/travel lens option that covers a really broad range of focal lengths.

I get that, as I am an AF guy myself.

However ... I thinking that at 14mm, the depth of field will be so expansive that just about everything will be in focus, anyway.

I'm considering an ultra wide angle myself. There's one on the market that is capable of true 1:1 macro. Think it's 15mm or real close to that. Gonna have to do some searching of the lens market myself pretty soon.

If you go to an R body consider the brand new 16mm 2.8 prime. Only $300.

That does look like a great lens. Small and inexpensive, toss it in the camera bag just to have on hand.

I found the same things others seem to have found. The center was crystal clear, but move toward the edges and things in the focal plane were soft. It created some strange images from time to time, from what I remember. I think I had it for about 2 months and got rid of it. It and the 24-105L EF lenses are two lenses that just seemed to be ok L lenses, and not quite to the strength of the other L offerings.

This isn't a Samyang for my R6, again it is for the M50 (12mm f2), but again, I have tried other lenses of theirs and have been happy with all of them. It does have a bit of fringing but nothing terrible.

This 2nd image was something like a 10 frame stitch with the lens:

That looks like a drone shot and while it might be a little out of the topic being discussed did you put your camera on a drone or was there some other secret?
