Today DxO Labs released their latest version of PhotoLab, PhotoLab 5. The two main new features are support of Fuji xtrans sensors and the implementation of Photolab's first version of an integrated digital asset manager. There is also a new Local Adjustments Control Lines feature which works in conjunction with control points. Unlike the graduated filters, Control lines are color sensitive. Control lines and control points can also be used with the new Chrominsnce / Luminance sliders.

In addition, after several years DXO has released an updated version of FilmPack. FilmPack 6 has a number of additional film emulations and other new features.

I beta-tested DxO Optics Pro and PhotoLab for a long time, but as my workflow switched to Fujifilm-based X-Trans sensors, I stopped participating. I recently switched most of my workflow to Leica systems (except for the X100V) - too late DxO! LOL. At least I am keeping my streak alive, as DxO does not support the native DNG raw file format of the Leica cameras I use.

I am downloading the demo now, more out of curiosity to see how DxO handle X-Trans files.

I received the standard "$20 off your upgrade offer" email yesterday for PL 5. However, this year I think I will wait for Black Friday, as there have been better upgrade offers then in past years. This year's added features are not as enticing for me, so I can wait. If a better upgrade offer doesn't happen, I may just skip a year in the upgrade cycle.

I saw no improvement in DXO Deep Prime version 5, either in image quality or processing time when compared to DXO v4.3.3. I shot a series of five pictures at ISO 12,800, 25,600, 51,200, 102,400, and 204,800. (I simulated the last three by setting my 80D to one, two, and three stops underexposure at ISO 25,600 and adjusting the exposure in DXO.) The resulting images from the two DXO versions were virtually identical; I could not tell the difference. Up to ISO 51,200, the images were probably usable, but the last two were not. The image colors in them were faded and distorted. I expected this result, but thought I'd give it a try.

As I use DXO primarily as a noise-reduction raw converter I see no need to pay for the upgrade. Others may have different opinions.

Well; I would say … try to clean those ISO 12,800 and up with Lightroom or C1 Pro and I would like to see the results.
The closest you can get to DeepPRIME at the moment is Topaz DeNoise but it’s not as good.

If you are using Photolab just for noise reduction I can confirm there is no difference in image quality between DeepPRIME in Photolab 4 and 5 ….. or at least I could’t find a difference.
On the other hand I can’t comment about Deep PRIME processing time because I rum my old comp on integrated Intel graphic card. Some other users are reporting significant speed bump with Photolab 5.

The significant bump in DeepPRIME processing speed is evident with the newer GPU's like the Nvidia RTX series. In addition PL 5's DeepPRIME processing takes advantage of the Mac M1 chip Apple Neural Engine to speed up DeepPRIME processing time very significantly. On Windows, DeepPRIME processing times have improved by as much as 1.5 times depending on the card and hardware. On a Mac, depending on the graphics card and the use of the neural network, PhotoLab 5 will process DeepPRIME as much as 4 times faster than PhotoLab 4 did using the same configuration. Some people on Macs are processing large raw images using DeepRIME in a little over 4 seconds! On my older middle of the road i7 Windows 10 computer with a much less powerful nVidia GTX 1050 ti graphics card, I am able to process raw images using PL 5's DeepRIME in around 20-22 seconds. In PL4 it took almost 2 seconds longer on average. A modest gain for me, to be sure, but still a gain.

Although I have seen references to improved DeepPRIME noise reduction quality, there were no discussions of any quality improvement to the current DeepPRIME feature during testing. If someone can provide a link suggesting that DeepPRIME quality was improved I would be grateful.

I suggest you go to DxO Photolab forum and ask Photolab users.
I bet you will find the answers for all your questions.

I have been an active member of DXO's user forum for quite a while and I'm a PhotoLab beta tester. Which questions posed here do you think require additional clarification from DXO's site?

If you were referring to the question of whether DeepPRIME image quality was improved in PhotoLab 5 Elite, it was not. As I indicated earlier, there was a marked improvement in processing speed depending on the computer platform and the grapics card used, but absolutely no changes to DeepPRIME's output quality.

It looked to me like you were looking for a link ''suggesting that DeepPRIME quality was improved''.
On the internet I could only find statements about general quality of DeepPRIME but no one wrote DeepPRIME in PL5 is better as in PL4.
I thought Photolab forum might give you some answers.

I can see how you might have thought that. RodneyCyr indicated he tested DeepPRIME to see if there was any improvement. I found that odd since improved DeepPRIME output quality was not part of the beta testing and was not mentioned as being included in PL5 by DXO when it was released. However, some posters on other sites have also suggested that DeepPRIME image quality mat have been improved for this release. What I was actually trying to do when I asked for links was to identify the source for this disinformation..
