Just wondered if anyone else shoots this type of event.
there can be some great action shots to be had.

I was working with a 1Dmk 2 & 300mm 2.8 is . on a monopod.
Enjoy and tell me what you think,

Cheers

This looks like fun -- for the photographer as well as participants and fans. You've captured some great action and faces -- makes me feel like I'm there with them. You've also framed them perfectly. It appears as though you were dealing with very bright sunshine and that's difficult when subjects are wearing hats that shade their face. You've dealt with that challenge very well too. My only suggstion is that you tweak curves, levels and contrast and add a touch of USM to give them more pop. Thanks for sharing!

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

I DO enjoy ....

Nice grabs, there. I particularly like the 2nd shot with everyone - horses included! - leaning right into the turn - very nice!

You know, in most sports that I shoot I'm shooting wide open to isolate the action - which creates a shallow depth-of-field. I'm not so sure that shooting wide open in this "sport" would be a big benefit. I'd want to keep the entire "rig" in focus, and with a shallow DOF you couldn't do that. Even in that shot that I like so much, the rear half is a little out of focus (or it seems to me like it is, anyway). At the very least, I think I'd like to see the horses and the drivers in focus ....

Again, nice shots .... and it does look like fun.

I would rather be the driver than the passenger ;) . Nice set of shots.

Thanks for all your replies.
The first picture was shot really for the faces & expressions which I think were good and so the main focus point was there, using A1 focus and tracking around with the subjects. on a previous run of the course I had recorded the whole rig in sharp focus, from different viewpoint and other camera body plus wider lens.
often at any event there are some great shots to be had by getting in close on some faces, and yet still being able to shoe the enviroment or what the subjects are envolved with.

work in PS is was very little, my main aim was to get a good range of tones and exposure in the most important part (the faces) and this was done without any need for levels adjustment .
the shot is "contre jour" (into the light).
to show the accuracy of metering I include a crop, sure you would be hard pushed to improve it with levels.
as on my monitor I have detail in the blacks and whites are on the limit, but not blown out, also with the printed version all works great.

Cheers

That's some serious leaning going on. I'm surprised nobody falls out of the carts. Nice job on this interesting sport.

Chris
Thanks for your reply,
this is good entertainment to watch, always against the clock with a system of penalties if they touch any of the cones etc. very skillful control and very fast, how they keep these things from tipping over is beyond me.

Cheers
Martin

Shouldn't this be 11 feet in the air?

Good shots, looks like fun to watch/shoot.
