Thinking of updating my iMac to a new 24 inch M1 iMac.

What is the most seamless way of getting the old data to the new iMac? I do have Time Capsule at home, that should do it, right?

Thanks

Man you are a bit behind.....LOL....you just turn on your new iMac in the same network and the darn thing will look for your old one and move everything for you. It's amazing.....

I have been holding off on updating as all my macs are doing everything I need at this point. My mac air is getting old in the tooth, but after DIY replacement of the battery it's been great.

You will love the M1 processor.....and as developers make native M1 apps (instead of needing to convert via apple software) the apps just keep getting faster.

Migration is easy... just follow the instructions.

Thanks for the info.

It will migrate everything over if you just turn them on in our same home system? I know that Apple products find new products that come into the home. I have quite a few photos on the current Mac and didn't know if I needed to save them to an external drive or something

The migration tool basically MIRRORS your current setup. Everything.

Wouldn't you need each computer to be connected to the internet or to WIFI or something, for that to work?

When I got a new iMac 6 years ago, it didn't do anything like you describe, despite the fact that my other iMac was sitting right there in the same room. . I can't help but to think that it will only do what you say if you have both of them connected to something that gives and/ore receives some kind of signal from an outside source.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Any device that I bring into the house would be linked in to my home WiFi system. I would guess that is how to do it.

It is somewhat depending on the OS of the old and new Macs. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350 (external link) and scroll down to the section Getting Ready.

If you get a 27" you can install your own RAM and save a bundle. Get the minimum RAM you can because Apple does give it away. My iMac is 2 years old. Not sure if Apple has made any changes to that.

Also beef your VRAM. All the AI stuff these days like Topaz Denoise, etc eats VRAM.

same WIFI network OR CAT 5 wired with router etc(faster of course).

old school Mac OS allowed DiRECT connect with ethernet cable machine to machine without a router. That functionality is gone today.

LOL

LOL

M1 chip not yet released in the 27 inch model. That M1 Max in the notebooks is pretty great! not yet in the desktops.

So, hell get an iMac Pro (just don't eat for the next 6 months and you can afford one)
