Get a 27"

I thought about it but it still uses the Intel chip and I don't know that I do enough multiple processes to need to upgrade the RAM that much for the cost?

I got 8gb and then upgraded to 64. Whether I need that much? It wasn't very expensive from a reliable 3rd party. I don't know what your needs are but if you can't upgrade yourself then yes you should be careful to getter amount you need and put your cash into other things.

I mentioned VRAM because Denoise has suggested and minimal requirements. There will be more AI coming out.

I got a new 27inch iMac in March and upped it to 32. It handles the R5 45mp files no bother. Everything is very fast. I was going to take it up to 64 but haven't bothered. It would be nice, though... :-)

When Apple first released there were early issues such as Photoshop and Lightroom compatibility.

Since then many developers have made software which is fully Apple Silicon compatible.

Apples workaround is an emulator to run intel based code on the M1 chips. This has worked out great. As more developed migrated to native M1 code, the speed of the M1 systems increased. Its one chip which contains the CPU, the GPU, Video Memory and RAM. Multiple cores with 2 dedicated to low power use.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max were a HUGE jump over the first M1 chip.

I debated that last 32 and it took about a year to do it. Might have been out of boredom. Since installing Monetary it would take about 7-8 seconds for the computer to wake up. I was getting a few spinning balls before Monterey.

I did usual maintenance and nothing. Then I ran First Aid on all drives and Time Machine showed an error. Not the first time that has happened. I reformatted it and things are OK now. Might have been HD error. I can't read the code it shows.

Hard Drive failure is a PITA in these machines.

I guess you can't make the backside of a Mac look sleek with a door over the hard drive site to allow an easy hard drive swap........

Interesting. I've decided not to update to Monterey just yet. Very happy with Big Sur and I know there are often glitches early on. How do you find Monterey?

If I were to do the 24 inch, I would do the 16 GB of RAM and the 1 TB SSD, which is a step up from the basic 24 inch.

Nothing to report. I keep reading about waiting 6 months. I usually update within the first week. Monty was pretty much day of release. Any minor glitches (and I haven't found that effect me) are corrected fairly quickly.

I went with a 500GB SSD. All my files are on an external drive. Like my old 24" iMac I've only used up about half. If you use Lightroom they recommend about 100GB of free disk space.

Photos is great! Almost nobody even gives it a try. Works great for me as my raw converter, editing program, and library management tool / organizer.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I think there are plans to switch it to the M1 chip but I am trying to keep the cost around $2000 and I am sure that it will be quite a bit more than that based on the current Intel chip version
