So i was asked by a prominent trade paper with a print subscription of 225,000 for some hi res images for an article in said publication.

what sort of compensation should i be looking at?

they also have an online presence

it is an article about a person, so it's not something that will probably be rerun many times if ever

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

To begin with while they have a cover price trade magazines do not have a subscription base, all of their income is based on trade shows and advertising, also being give away publications they are not audited in the same manner as retail publications and that make pricing for content a bit fuzzy.

And when it comes to trade shows that is the bread and butter of most trade magazines and CV-19 has hurt them badly, many of them have dropped print publication and are digital only, some have tried virtual trade shows with limited success and some others have just gone out of business.

As such what they where willing to pay a few years back is probably not happening any more.

By any chance have you asked them what their standard rate is for content they wish to use, that might a very good first step, you may be pleasantly surprised as to what they are willing to pay, you also need to now is it a one up use or on going license, exclusive, non-exclusive or limited time license.

You may want to go tho their web site and check out their advertising rates, they will give you a ballpark price of the value of their inside front and back covers and per page rates, they are more than likely going to use your photograph as advertising related a feature story so that may help you decide what to charge, they want to fill that spot versus selling it and you have the content to fill it, so your content should have an equal or better value to them than the page itself.

Another angle is, if you know what other paid subscription publications, with similar subscriber numbers are paying for content, take their cover price double and determine the ratio between their cover price and the trade publication and that may give you an idea of what you can try to ask for.

Do what you love and you will love what you do, that applies to both work and life.

okay, i misspoke when i said trade publication. it is magazine along the lines of Sporting Times, Hockey News, The Athlete, Baseball Digest...

it is for an article written. I was asked if i had any photos of X athlete that they could run with a story written by another person (likely freelance written). i DID ask what their considerations for use were but that was a 7 days ago and no response. i sent a follow up today but me thinks, theyve moved on to another photographer's 'pick me pick me' mentality

In that case all you can do is sit back and wait.

And don't go out for dinner on what they might pay you. ;-)a
