I received an email and then an arranged phone call from a store designer of a major international coffee house (rhymes with Flartrucks) who want to purchase exclusive rights to 3 of my photos for a redesign of a single store that is in my neighborhood. The designer said they want to place three photos of my neighborhood beach in a store close to the beach. They asked me to send them a quote as to how much I would want to be compensated. They said I could be involved with their printer to ensure print is to my satisfaction blah blah.I indicated that I really don't have a passion for the printing side of the process and once I sell the rights they could print them in B&W or hang them upside down for all I care..

But the next step is a quote. they want me to quote a price to them......Any advice? Would $1000 per photo be too little or too much? It is a bit of a conundrum for me...they are a multi-billion dollar company but want art exclusive only to the one store (this is permanent art, not part of a planned rotating art display). This will not be used by corporate office for promotion or in any digital form....I failed to ask if this is a competitive bid, if other artists had been contacted but that was never suggested and I doubt this is the case.
My only fear is that I ask for too much and price myself out.
Also they are buying exclusive rights. I could not use any of those three images in any potential neighborhood calendar that I was planning on developing in 3 years when I retire from my day job. There is a local photographer, a bit of a hack, who sells about 10,000 of these through a neighborhood Facebook group. I am also active in the FB group and members seem to prefer my style over the established photographer (he is retired and a long time resident). Members continually ask if I put together a calendar or sell prints but I have resisted because I have a FT job. I shoot in my spare time and don't want a part time photography job.

Any thoughts on the pricing?

My wife was with Starbucks for about 8 years as a store designer out of the Dallas regional office. The designers in the regional offices have an overall budget for a store ... new or redo, and yes it's tight. My wife contracted with various artists, photographers, furniture makers, iron fabricators etc to provide each store with what is referred to as "local relevance". Even hired a local artist to carve a very cool "chainsaw art" bear for a store in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Over the years SB has got away from a lot of this local input, have tighten budgets, and have standardized more things out of Seattle. It's great your regional designer still wants, and is able to do this rather than hang a piece of stock "art" from their corporate inventory.

Not sure what kind of budget the designer is working with these days. I personally would keep things simple. I would grant them exclusive rights. I would also be compelled to deliver the turn-key, finished product. You could probably expect to be able to quote them up to 2 to 3,000 before they they would balk ... Letting them know that they won't have to do any printing or framing, for that just constitutes more time and trouble for the design team. They typically are working on a tight opening deadline as well and would like to have one less thing to do. If you get push back you certainly have the option of negotiating from there. Hope this helps.

Couple of snaps from a SB store my wife did that used to be a local iconic restaurant that resembled a steamboat. I created the canvas print from an existing photo and she commissioned a company to create a shadow box from salvaged artifacts.

Thanks - great insight!
Is that $2,000 - $3,000 for each photo, or for all three?
I will have to discount as they have made it clear that have a print shop they deal with...which is fine for me as printing has a whole new set of technical skills I haven't acquired.

2-3 for all 3 would be my best guess. Then hit them up to hire you to professionally shoot the store after the the new interior is finished. So often they'll try to document their work with smart phone pics. I've made some good money providing them store images that they've used internally and on their website. Here's an example from another company. Lots of times they need some good sharp, clean images and just don't really think to have them done. Compare to the p&s quality shots above, taken by an employee.

She has since sent me an artists' rendering of the redesigned coffee store with my 3 photos prominently displayed in the large dining/drinking room. If they have artists doing renderings they must have a large budget.

As a noobie I just don't want to sell myself too cheap.

Sounds like you have a pretty good feel for the client and scope of work. Worse they're going to do is let you know your quote is a bit out of their range, giving you the option to adjust more to their liking. Still sounds like you should get a fair amount for this project. Let us know how things turn out. Always good for us shooters to see where the current market's at.
