Hello. I want to work on this type of shot...

...not of the Beatles, obviously, but the style. Can anyone give some tips, or provide a decent "how to" website for accomplishing this? Thanks.

I am very good with natural light photography, but am now expanding into people and flash photography and have purchased a bunch of good lighting equipment... mostly Godar flashes (3), reflectors/umbrellas, stands, etc.

This image is 4 individual portraits collaged. You can tell by the way George is slightly forward of John and Paul. The portrait was taken with a single main side light on a black background and was shot on film.

Does the room need to be pitch-black dark?

Not at all. This is super easy to accomplish.

Turn off your strobe and adjust your exposure (increase aperture value) until the picture goes black. Lock in those exposure values, turn on your strobe, and adjust the strobe output until you get the desired effect.
