I got notification that my CC was charged. Then checked BH and saw that it's shipped and en route. This will probably be my last lens for awhile. I've got way too many in my collection and I think I pretty much got everything covered for what *I* would personally ever shoot. lol

I may opt to pick up a 1.4x and/or 2x later. We'll see.

Cool. Glad you guys got (or soon will get) yours. I got unlucky in an annoying way.

I ordered one on 4/20 from Canon. All looked good, and I received an email from Canon on May 27th saying that it would ship within 24-48h. I was really excited. On the 29th (Memorial Day), I logged into my account to get the tracking number. Found out the order was canceled! Tried calling them, but they were closed. Called first thing on Tuesday (which means 6 am Pacific Time) to see what was going on, but they said there was a problem with the billing address, and they just canceled it. I asked if we could process the card over the phone, but they said since it was canceled, they would have to place a new order. Since it is backordered there was no estimate of when I would get it. I talked to the supervisor, but no luck. Very frustrating.

I look forward to seeing your posts as it looks like I will have to live vicariously through you guys on this one :)

My local camera store, Kenmore Camera near Seattle, appears to have it in stock.

Okay Guys! I took about 45 minutes and ran around the yard with my dog after work and I have some initial impressions.

1. This lens is really light and easy to handle. It's extremely well balanced.
2. It autofocus like the RF 24-70. It's instant and absolutely silent.
3. It's stupid sharp. I didn't do a head to head but I'd be willing to say it's better than the 300 IS II prime.
4. AF Speed with the 1.4 and 2X TC's is the fastest I've seen. Granted, I only use the RF TCs on my RF400 2.8 , this is substantially faster. I didn't do any tracking or anything, but from near to far, far to near its instant. I actually said "WOW" when it snapped back and forth.
5. IQ seems to be excellent with both TC's wide open. The 1.4 is slightly better wide open but I don't think anyone can complain with what they'll get using them. Having a 200-600 5.6 that's easily hand-holdable is really appealing.

Here's 3 shots with no processing added. Nothing special here, just some samples that are SOOC, converted from RAW to Jpeg in Lightroom. (View them on Flickr to get the best peek)

Yep, I snatched it! :-D Thank you very much for the tip on availability!

I had checked all my local stores, but they didn't have it. Yesterday after seeing your post I checked, and it did show in stock. I filled out the purchase form all the way to the point that all I needed was to press the submit button. I then called them to verify it was indeed in stock. They verified that they had one (and only one) in stock, and I could go ahead and complete the purchase! It will take a few days to get here, but it beats being in a never-ending line at Canon or a big retailer.

Once again, thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the update on this. I'll be selling my 200-400mm as well. I've been anxious to verify the AF / IQ of the RF 100-300mm with the 1.4x TC. My main use for the 200-400mm has been my son's soccer matches. I also have the Sigma 120-300mm, which is great, but the AF performance isn't as good as the 200-400mm, especially with the 1.4x TC added. Even though the resulting 168-420mm range is appealing, as 200mm is often too narrow for close by action (and I end up carrying a 70-200 on a second body), the AF performance difference is a deal breaker, so I stick to the 200-400mm.

The RF 100-300mm will improve the zoom range to 140-420mm! The 140mm on the wide side will make a huge difference for me. If the AF/IQ with the 1.4xTC are even better than the 200-400mm it is an absolute winner for me. I'd be very happy with on par :-). Added bonus: ~ 1 Kg weight reduction!

My 100-300 came in also. I sold my 200-400mm to help fund it. This lens works great with the extenders. The weight is very nice. So far very happy.
