In California, we are typically blessed with enviable weather. In the San Francisco Bay area, we typically have 260+ sunny days per year. As a result, games are usually postponed if it rains. As one can imagine, all this contributes to my having very limited experience shooting in the rain.
Today was the last round of Soccer Fall League play, so that the game couldn't be postponed. I was not well prepared. Looked in the bag and... where is my lens/camera rain cover? Oops. Had an umbrella and my portable stool. Awkwardly holding the umbrella with my left shoulder/cheek with the handle tucked inside my jacket, I was able to shoot with the camera mostly out of the rain and only the 200-400mm f/4 sticking out. Not sure how good the weather sealing really is, especially with the adapter, but hoping it will be ok. Not sure what the best procedure is to prevent damage to the equipment. Got home and wiped off the excess water from the surface of the lens + camera. Then I just put them in the office where it is dry, and I'm waiting until tomorrow to take the lens out. Is this the best procedure?
At any rate, I'm extremely happy with the R3 + 200-400mm combo.
BTW, my son's team only needed a draw today but won the match 5 x 2 to clinch the Fall League title! Woohoo!!!
