VERY OLD… Canon EF500mm f/4.5L USM ………..NOT 500mm F4 !

I’ve an opportunity buy this lens fairly cheap, I loved my 500mm F4 IS which I sold years ago and yearn after getting another.

Please can someone advise.

1/ Would this lens be up there with the IQ of my old 500mm F4 IS

2/ Probably the hardest question, would the lens AF on my R6, if yes would I loose I.E. Eye AF

3/ ok I have a 100-400mm MKII….. do you think the 500mm be a step up or maybe step down in AF Speed and IQ?

Ok I know it’s a bit of a risk maintenance wise, I’m sure the spares would be scarce.

Many Thanks

Any EF lens is advertised to work on the R6, and eye AF isn't dependent on what type of lens, at least not directly on what type of EF lens, so yes it should also work.

Framerate/burst rates are dependent on the lens however.

Thanks, yes I only get 6fps on my 24-105F4, FPS isn’t a major problem for me although I think Electronic Shutter should work at 20FPS I think ?

Yes, ES will work, but you may be limited on EVF display modes like high speed+, etc. Not sure how lens could affect that however, so this may not be a concern.

I don't remember what restrictions exist for lenses used in ES, as I don't shoot ES 20fps all that often, there are just too many files to look through. I am used to bringing home about 300-500 shots per event now, with about an 20% cull rate, but with 20fps, all those numbers go way up. ;)

Here is the R6 PDF, and using PDF viewers, it should be easier to search for things than the paper manual.

Search for the word "lenses", and then go through all matches. I have used this to find lens specific exceptions in the manual in the past.
