Macro shooting with the G6 - convince me that I don't need the 250D!

I have been seriously thinking about doing some more macro work, having done a LOT with film about 20 years ago. I used to own a dedicated macro lens for my Canon manual focus camera sytem, and enjoyed the new world it opened up for me, with its endless possibilities.

I have used the macro function on the G6 a few times, and it seems to work well. The supermacro is quite intimate and I recognize it as a digital zoom, but its optics seem fine. Do I really need to look at the 250D close-up lens as this would give me greater working room and would it allow me to get even a bit closer? Is it worth spending the $150 CDN or so? My present results are fine, just wondering if I could do better.

Opinions, please.

I have the Canon Pro 1 it has macro and super macro as well.
I jumped out and bought the 500D now I wish I had waited to see what the camera would do first. I really like what the cameras has over the 500 D.
I had to buy the adapter and the 500 D spent like 140 or so on the two.

I already have the filter adapter for my soft focus and polarizers, plus I need it for the WA converter.

Now my filter adapter is just for the filters the adapter I had to buy for the 500 D
was a seperate purchase listed as a conversion lens adapter Canon LA-DC58C I have no idea if its the same one you would need for yours or not or if yours would need the conversion lens adapter at all.
Check JR.com for pricing. Thats where I found the best deal about a month ago.

Yup, that's the one I have.

Too bad it wasn't the height of spring with lots of flowers, as I'd go out and see if the "naked" macro is good enough as is.........

The 250D is only a good quality close up lens,
any close up lens of the right screw size works.
I have a cheap Japanese one that works just fine and was a fraction of the price.
I suspect even a 49mm or 52mm screw one, used with a 58mm screw adapter would work just fine.
A hoya or some such could be the equal in quality .

This would be worth trying before spending real cash.

The 250D has two elements and has a great reputation for sharpness. I have never been a believer in third-party items for any of my Canon gear, and my wallet is all the thinner for it.

I do appreciate the idea, though. I had thought of getting 67mm filters (my EF zooms both use that oddball size) for close-ups and soft focus effects, and using a step-down ring to fit my G6. I guess I have to decide if I will be using filters that often for my EOS gear, as, thus far, I haven't hardly had need of anything since I stopped shooting weddings.

I was kinda suprised of the quality of the super macro and the macro on the Pro 1.
We have had flowers here for a few months now.

I did some experimenting recently, with Marumi macro filter which cost me ... hm, aroun 15 USD?
Three sets for your attention, macro mode in full zoom and the same shot with filter

No crop there.
I think I had to play a little bit with apperture, trying to get more depth field.

Good stuff - an alternative is a good set of close-up lenses in +1, +2, and +4 diopters, but, again, how good is the quality? The 250D is a +4 diopter.

I just ordered the 250D for the G6; no sense dithering as I know it will be the right tool for the job. How about one of those pricey MR-14EX's as my next purchase?

Wonderful. Do you own a close-up lens? I see you have a Lensmate kit.
