Hi Pekka, this is a great site where I have learned so much about both the technical and the artistic aspects of photography, and we have to thank you for providing the forum for us.

I don't think anyone wants you to feel guilty about focusing on your day job. That is perfectly reasonable. I think Tom and others (myself included) would be more than happy to volunteer our services to help keep the gear section up to date. Perhaps you can create another staff category without the moderation privileges (which, understandably, you would be loath to give to anyone but the most trusted of members) that only allows for edits and additions to the gear database section. I think you'll have many members who would put their hands up to volunteer in this capacity.

Just an idea. Cheers, and happy New Year!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Hey Jake!

You are right, it’s in the gear browser; what’s weird is that when I upload a pic taken with that lens, the forum software doesn’t recognize the metadata, and I have to select it from my gear list in order for it to display correctly. Separate issue than I had thought then :)

Sorry about that. I have worked a lot in my real profession and doing some other important stuff that I can not put aside.

Can you make a list of most important cameras and lenses that are missing, please? That would make my work a lot easier and faster.

We appreciate the work you've done so far. Take your time with everything. I've been a long time lurker of these forums and seeing it bloom has been great.

It’s the same with the RF 800/11. It’s in the gear browser but I always have to pick it from my gear list, filling it in manually. Maybe there’s a small difference somewhere between the embedded exif and the way it is registered un AMASS, like a space where one shouldn’t be, or something like that?

This is true of a number of lenses. I don't understand the goings on in the software but some (most) lenses are easily identified. a select few are not.

I'd often wondered about such. I've one doesn't automatically enter itself.
I'd wondered, but never concluded, if it was something to do with the way I entered the data in first place?

When ever I use my Sigma 150-600C lens I have to choose it from my list of owned lenses.

When ever I use my Sigma 150-600C lens I have to choose it from my list of owned lenses.

I think I have explained this earlier, but I'll do it again.

If we entered lenses in database as they'd appear in all images' EXIF, we'd have about 15-25 different "procounciations" of a single lens. Like

70-200 2.8
70-200 f/2.8
70-200 F 2.8 L
70-2002.8L
70-200mm 2.8-L
etc.

And still, we need to know the manufacturer, too. Simply "50 1.8" is not enough.

In a gear database that can be searched and have statistical and usable meaning, each item should be listed there only once. So, we do the exact thing, each lens has an ID number by which it is referred to in all instances where it is needed. We can not put next to each gallery photo a string of text to describe a lens, and do a text search for it. We could not get a page like https://photography-on-the.net/forum/gallery.php?camera=11 in a few milliseconds as it is now, if done with text search (with dozens of variations) it would take probably 10 seconds each time.

Practically, EXIF is a big ugly mess of strings. So, we have to have algorithms which guess from (usually) very sparse data a match in the database. Sometimes it is easy, for example if there is an ID number found in EXIF, often it is not.

For this task I have coded some functions which put all the found data (found by EXIFTOOL) in nomenclature parts which then can be analyzed if they belong to certain manufacturer, what focal ranges are, is there an aperture or range, have clues of manufacturer's naming of products, etc. etc. - all that is found is put to a long data item. This is then analyzed to get possible best matches, we even build a list of all possible valid notation variations of lenses in database for brute search if all fails. We also have nicknames of lenses, variations of product codes (like Sony has ILCE's and Canon has Rebels/Kiss) and other stuff. The found candicates are ranked as in competition and a winner is decided if there is enough confidence of it. If not, you get a list of suggestions in metadata editor.

I can teach the system to be better, for that I need those offending photos :) Let me know which photos are not getting EXIF and I'll investigate.

Happy 2022 for all!

.
I totally understand how and why some lenses, particularly 3rd party lenses, do not appear automatically in the POTN EXIF. . It is because the cameras themselves do not recognize the lens.

For example, my Canon cameras are not made to recognize Sigma lenses. . So when I take a photo with a Sigma lens on my Canon body, the EXIF info that the camera generates and attaches to the image file does not include the lens, because Canon bodies have not been programmed to recognize these 3rd party lenses. . And, obviously, if the EXIF data that is in the digital file that I upload to POTN does not have the lens information in it, then of course there is no way for POTN software to know for sure just which lens was used for that photo.

What I explained above, is that indeed correct?

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Pekka, it’s all my photos taken with the RF 800/11, like this one: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=19323969 or this one: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=19304480

And thanks!

A happy and healthy 2022 to you too.

my EM1 2 and the Panasonic 100-400 doesn't show automatically
This POST 19325640 is latest and I haven't edited the metadata to show the lens
I take it the metadata should automatically show in my post if my gear is in my gear list on POTN

I use that lens for manual metadata since the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS is not there in the browser.
