You know what I'm also noticing about the future - Canon does not lead in information anymore. By now Rudy Winston would have had all types videos out for the R system. There would have been articles and blogs. Nothing. The closest we have to any decent AF info is this.

http://downloads.canon.com …_Mark_III_AFGuideBook.pdf (external link)

I did pick this up for the R5 as I'm look for more info in some specific areas.

And Rudy didn't hold a candle to Chuck Westfall, who could even be found in one of the popular online forums.

8x10 format? Wow! 4x5 should have been more than adequate. Largest I ever had was a Mamiya 6x7 that did everything I could ever want. When the 645's came out I jumped to them and had no regrets. I love hearing al these comments about how people want to go to a mirrorless since the normal DSLR is too big. They should have spent some time with me years ago lugging around a 6x7 and a couple extra lenses. Plus changing out a roll of film every 10 shots. Not a whole lot of spray & pray back then.

Been there, did that. Interestingly, I only shoot a few more frames in a portrait session with my mirrorless camera than I shot with a Mamiya RZ67. I will shoot extra frames for composite fodder, but that's only slightly more than I had to shoot for "insurance" with film.

Big negatives were manna from heaven for a Nikon shooter and I envied the folks who could use those cameras right. But damn, that RB67 was a beast. Even a little Hasselblad was a pain in the butt. I used a 4x5 a few times. Did a full zone-system session for a project in college. That was fun. Made me feel like I was brewing my own beer. Under the hood and everything. Always took a long time.

Yes that was fun. I tried to build up a library of developers and developing times for various films and papers. Ansel was just to meticulous for me. Maybe if I had a computer back then. I prefer digital records.

Here was the kit I purchased and built. I even built my own vacuum table and got a vacuum cleaner for $10 at a garage sale. For larger paper I built my own rinsing tanks out of plexiglass. I used to build aquariums when I was a kid. Silicone is amazing.

That looks very complex and confusing ..... most likely because there are 4 terms in those instructions that I don't understand, or know what they mean. . In some ways it's like I am reading a foreign language.

But I'm sure there is a step-by-step tutorial available on YouTube that would show me what to click on at each juncture of the process. . If / when I get a camera that I need to do firmware to, I will look up your post again and then search YouTube for something that shows me how to execute each of those steps.

.

I updated firmware for the first time ever today. It took me five minutes. The download from Canon also came with a very easy to follow PDF of instructions.

You should also check for lens FW which can be installed via the camera as well.

Does lens firmware show on the Canon website? I always keep my cameras current but have never done anything with my lenses. Thanks.

I didn't know Canon lenses were firmware updatable so i poked around a bit and found THIS (external link). It has a list of Canon lenses that are firmware updatable. Learn something new every day. :)

Both my RF100-500 and RF 24-105 had them. Not sure if TC’s have them but I check once in a while.

There was an update last year for the 100-400 MkII, also. I *think* the TCs are just "dumb" pass-through devices, and wouldn't get/need firmware updates; but, I've been wrong before.

I’d say you are likely correct.

How do you tell what version firmware a lens has? I know how to check for the body firmware. I have one lens that shows on the Canon list for firmware update. Thanks.

Go one level deeper in the menu; on m5.6, where it shows your camera firmware, select that option, while the lens in question is attached to the camera. The subsequent screen shows both firmware versions.

Thanks for that, I didn't know you could do that. Much appreciated.
