I had to look up “Iditarod”. Interesting. Is that as big in Canada as our Eleven cities tour is here?

As to hockey, it’s as Rhody mentioned, we are pretty decent at field hockey but on ice we skate and don’t play games. I have no idea why not.

Not nearly as many participants in the Iditarod (or the Yukon Quest = a trail from the Canadian Yukon to Alaska), but a big event. From what I've read of ice hockey history, though, the Netherlands seems to have contributed some important roots, bring it to North America. And there's this: https://upload.wikimedia.org …on_the_Ice_-_WGA01076.jpg (external link) So thanks! :-)

I used one of Avercamp’s winter scenes as a screensaver on my Mac years ago, although not the one with people playing a type of ice hockey. I didn’t know that painting at all. So thanks for the link.

I know absolutely nothing about the history of ice hockey. I assumed it originated in Canada (or more generally North America). I looked up the history of ice skating on Wikipedia and I have learned that The Netherlands have several ice hockey teams and some compete internationally. I had no idea.

Avercamp’s painting to me is weird, almost an anomaly but the painting shows that the Dutch did play a hockey-like game on the ice. So it’s really me being uneducated on the subject. Question now is, if people here did play it in the 17th century, why did they stop? Fascinating.

Levina, the Iditarod is actually entirely in Alaska. It follows the original trade route from Anchorage to Nome Alaska. I actually know a woman who participated back in the 80's. It is pretty grueling

I looked it up on the map as I had no idea where Nome is. That is some distance to cover by dog sled, Jo. Must be gruelling indeed!

I have travelled from Anchorage to Nome but was very happy to do so by airplane! :p Below a pic I took on a backstreet walking in Nome. It's attached to a sledge so I suppose it's pulled out, as needed, to the appropriate location for the races.

The painting makes it look more like golf but on ice. And one figure to the left is putting on skates. Reminds me of Brueghel scenes - wonder if anything like hockey ever turns up in their work? In any case, I now know a lot more about hockey history than I did before Part 795.
