13 pages.

I'm fascinated by OP been wild cookie. No laptop because it is too heavy.
I assume OP's safari is not then they are moving their bodies in vehicles to show bunch of tourists to the animals.

By OP demand of something light it looks like true safari on foot. Where you have no power sources, no hotel rooms for sassies, where you could plug your charger for batteries used for 1500 pictures per day.

I flew in this plane in Canada. As the OP mentioned earlier in the thread, I was limited in how much weight I could take with me. I completely understand his limitations, as I read he is traveling in a small plane for at least part of the trip.

Several ideas in the thread. Often the situation is a mix of a) limited or slow internet, b) weight limits are severe c) time of transfer - I lead safaris so need fairly quick data transfer as I need to spend time with clients doing image review/critques, socializing, confirming transfer logistics, etc. I will look at using phone as transfer device, but am suspicious that card to phone followed by phone to ssd sounds slow. I’m looking into the Nexto device but several have reported short lifespan of device. Someone else mentioned a Lacie device I need to follow-up on. The LaCie is discontinued a both Amazon and B&H which concerns me.

How long are you out in the bush? Seems like it's a matter of weight, how much file size you need, and what you'll be doing on battery. Are you already bringing a lot of batteries for the camera, or also able to charge them at base? If you need a screen for reviewing with clients....then maybe a portable USB battery and an iPad with enough memory on board for a day (and you can offload to SSD during the evening). The main bottleneck in transfering files to iOS and SSD is WIFI transfer of RAWs (so uncompressed RAWs and not being close enough to the camera would take the longest). Bringing up iPad if you'd like a device with screen to show folks the pictures in camera or off SSD. 2 batteries weighing 1 lb and fully charged can charge the iPad 4 times. With Canon software, you can preview JPEG or RAW off the iPad. All depends on what your needs are and how much storage you need.

Do you realize when "out in the bush" a cellphone is useless and just extra baggage?

Not useless. It may not be able to make a call, but it's still a computer with common I/O interfaces. I use my old cell phones for a number of non-communication purposes.

Why is that?

Phones are smaller than a computer, yet can backup pictures as suggested earlier in the thread. I used to use a phone to store books to read before tablets were usable. Modern phones make passable wide-angle cameras, the GPS works perfectly well without a cellular signal for getting an accurate position. I've geo-referenced maps and charts that are independent of a network so the GPS can show my position. The GPS can give latitude/longitude I can plot on a paper map, too.

No signal, no service.

I'm assuming you mean data (3G, 4G, 5G), text, and voice. No, you can't immediately post your video of you twisting a lion's tail or other stupid safari tricks, but the phone isn't useless.
Doesn't the camera still work? You are claiming that you can't take pictures and videos that the phone can store locally?
You are claiming the phone memory won't work without being connected to a network? It's impossible to download pictures from a camera for backup?
You claim the phone GPS won't work without a cellular network?
You are making the claim that e-books stored on the phone are no longer usable without a signal.
If you don't like books, I suppose you claim some games will no longer work off the phone network?
I can't use a local text editor to take notes for review later?

Please explain why none of these things will work. These don't even need WiFi to function!

I gave you some examples of things that can be done "off-line" yet your reply above suggests I'm wrong. Please explain further than your 4 sentence reply.

I returned from the UK a couple of weeks ago, and I chose not to get international service on my personal phone. I did everything I wanted using the free hotel WiFi after work- chat with friends on WeChat andother apps, used skype for voice. While good internet via WiFi isn't common while the original poster is on Safari, it shows what can be done without a cellular signal.

You would be surprised how many apps will fail to work properly without being able to connect to the net, I don't use a phone for a camera, so that wasn't even considered.

For me phones are for text/talk and sometimes for locating which requires a internet connection.

If I need comms out in the ocean I use LMR or satellite, LMR out to 20 miles or so and sat after that.

A very limited computer with limited memory and slow processing.

Older cell phones may be slower than up to date laptops, but they can be more than enough for multiple tasks (note taking, reading previously downloaded content, video creation, etc). You have been able to record 4K Dolby Vision videos on the iPhone. Also, cell phone processors from a few generations ago are the architecture used for manufacturing new computer's system on a chip designs. Lastly, about the number of apps that require internet: it's very easy to check your apps-all smart phones have easy access to airplane mode.

The OP has complained about needing to bring a Dell XPS, and has at first is looking for a portable file management system. Not all professionals need a 7 lb "rugged" laptop to be out in the field (they are not editing photos in the elements).

None the less a cellphone is not going to replace a laptop for editing and is a poor choice for storage.

A tablet may be a better screen for editing photos or videos, but why is a smart phone a poor choice for storage?? It's easy enough to get a phone that has 512GB internal, and using an external SSD with it is common place.

For some that is no where enough storage and changing out Micro SD'd defeats the purpose of an external storage device.

And there is the fact cellphones are generally speaking, fragile devices.

We're not talking about "for some." We're talking about the specific needs of the OP.

We’re not talking micro SD…we’re talking SSD. Also smart phones have gotten pretty sturdy by themselves (never mind adding a rugged case to them). Water proof, gorilla glass, metal shells.

In which case a cell set isn't going to do the job.
