hotels and restaurants that had poor service and food in a Darwinian fashion.

Hey, not all the hotels and restaurants in Darwin have poor service!:-P

internet access now is very different than just a couple of years ago due to improvements forced by the pandemic.

I wish some of those improvements would reach our fair shores. I'm still on ADSL (and not by choice) uploading at 900kbps on a good day.:-(.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

It probably would have been bought out by someone, if it didn't happen in 2018, because the pandemic tended to eliminate hotels and restaurants that had poor service and food in a Darwinian fashion.
However, that supports the comments that Levina and I have made stating that internet access now is very different than just a couple of years ago due to improvements forced by the pandemic.

Rather ironic that someone in UK posts this on POTN just now...

Without any context, that statement doesn't mean much. It could be like one of the 0.2% problems you've experienced in the USA.

I hope it gets improved there soon. Some of the very rural places here in Nebraska are getting fiber and gigabit service!
I once was flying above rural Nebraska and needed to reconnect my iPad to the ADSB receiver WiFi connection. I was surprised how many WiFi spots I could see at 300 meters, both the numbers and I could actually detect them at a distance! I wish I grabbed a screen shot. Nothing but farms around me!

Most of Darwin now has fibre and up to 100Mbps download but I'm in a little pocket that has yet to get it. But everything comes to those who wait ...

Does it need WiFi to copy files from an SD card to other media?

EDIT: deleted as not relevant (I read “you” instead of “it”…  ).

Of course you can also still use a cabled camera-to-phone adapter. I have one for my Apple devices and it works great. It’s basically just a small, short cable. Plus it’s plug and play and transfer is obviously very quick.
For an iPhone it’s this one: https://www.apple.com …311d8909bca989ceca23c18c2 (external link)

The link gives the description:

Transfer your photos, videos, music, and documents between SD cards, USB flash drives, external hard drives and smart devices including your phone, tablet, and laptop, without the need of Internet connection, whilst as a travel router.

* Ways to transfer files: SD Card -> HDD / Flash Drive (one-key backup) Flash Drive / SD Card / HDD / SSD -> Phone / iPad / Laptop

* 3 network modes: bridge, access point, and router.

2.4GHz & 5.8 GHz dual band

IOW, it would seem that the router is not a 'smart device' that has any file management capability to move files/folder between memory chip/flash drive from/to another storage device...it needs a 'smart' device (phone/computer) to handle file management tasks.
"Connect a USB hard drive, SD card, and flash drive to your phone, tablet, and laptop by the dedicated app or just webpage"
And it is Wifi signal, not Bluetooth.

OTOH the description does state, "Upload your SD card-stored files to HDD without computer"...does that really mean 'using your phone/tablet' and not a conventional PC/laptop (since Apple format disks do not work with it) -?

Probably best to call the manufacturer to find out really how it can operate! https://www.ravpower.com/pages/contact-us (external link)

It's probably simpler than that description. Follow the actual link posted earlier to see how it works.

One of the illustrations show an SD card plugged directly into an SD slot with a small hard drive connected by USB, and there is an SD->USB button. So it looks like the WiFi capability is not necessary for that application.

OK, thanks...

So does it just start to copy files willynilly without any intervention? How do you know they have been copied successfully? Only in one direction or both? Does it clone (thereby also deleting files that have been removed in the source)?

Please don't answer because it might not be easy to find out and it is really up to me if I were interested.

As mentioned before, I use a lightweight laptop in my travels. I just get amused and sometimes frustrated by these ads for very complicated gadgets that don't explain what they do concisely in simple terms or how they work, with (for this application) tons of information that is superfluous and distracting. If I were interested, then I would read a review or find the manual.

I'm pretty sure devices like this have been around for years. For those who won't take a laptop, this could be a solution.

looking at the user guide here: https://cdn.shopify.com …nual.pdf.pdf?v=1590723616 (external link)

it does look able to copy files from SD to USB attached storage without another device attached.

4. When the SD card indicator stays solid on,
press and hold the SD USB Button for 5 seconds
until the SD card indicator flashes again
(RP-WD009 is reading your SD card).

5. Wait until the SD card indicator stops flashing,
then the one key backup is completed.

definitely looks useful!

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

and here is how he described his current situation:

"I am in a rental villa on Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas.
I would imagine that the 5 or 6 villas here are all using the same connection from the provider how ever that works, plus with the two villas we are renting, likely to be using the same WiFi connection, and there are 8 of us using it.
Sometimes little or no connection, especially moving out to the bedrooms."
