Good afternoon

I have a fault with my Canon 24-105 lens.

I have started to get the err 01 error. I have cleaned the contacts but the fault keeps occuring.

It seems to work fine at f4, but comes up with the fault at any other f-stop.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

Steve

A common failure is the aperture flex cable has failed. Some people replace the part themselves since it is about US$ 15. See the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-FmvQubSVw (external link)

Hopefully it's nothing too expensive.

Poking around the web indicates at least one final cost in 2013 was “just over £100”. The repair was done by a Canon facility in the UK.

They told me to expect around £125 depending on the fault.

I've taken mine to Fixation. Woman there seems to think it's the flex/ribbon cable

Certainly not confident to take an expensive (at the time) lens apart so will let the experts sort it. Don't mind paying provided it's a reasonable amount

They have said this could be the fault with mine.

Definitely not confident to do it myself.

good call... I've done a shutter replacement on a 1D2 so happy to wield a screwdriver, but I'm not keen on dismantling lenses! when my 24-70mm ribboncable failed (same symptoms as your lens) I sent it in to get done.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Started getting the Err 01 on my 24-70 f/4 last week. Took it in to a local repair place and was quoted $415 for changing the aperture control unit. Seems a bit much for me. Not sure what to do next.

Just ran across this

The place you took it to - is it REALLY a repair place? . Or do they just sub the repair out to a 3rd party repair person?

I ask this because it is common practice for many brick and mortar camera shops to offer repairs, but they don't actually do the repair work at all. . They simply hire a local (or not so local) repair guy to fix the lens, then charge you a very hefty percentage over the actual cost of the repair.

"No thank you" to supporting that business model. .I will take my cameras and lenses to the actual repair person myself - I don't need a go-between who rapes my wallet, for doing practically nothing.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Accidentally found this repair service on eBay when I was checking prices on used EF 24-105s. Mine had a malfunctioning aperture control and was getting that same error 01. Shipped it to Kurt's Camera Repair in San Diego, they fixed it for about $250 with a 6 month warranty and a fast turnaround. https://www.kurtscamerarepair.com/camera-repair (external link)

This place is actually very reputable and do all the repairs in house. Got some work done from them in the past and they had been very reasonable. Maybe, times have changed?

I have the same issue with my old EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM. I ended up solving it by buying the EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS II USM instead.
