Sorry I didn't include the scan number. I know I have on others.

You must be have a lot of fun and enjoyment going through those old negatives.

I wish I had a lot more than 200!! In the past I have tried looking for more glass negatives in flea markets and such, but never found even one.

You can zoom in further than I can, but it looks to me like there is a guy wearing a hat in front, and to the left of the bikers. I will post that shot if I find it.

I've never found glass negs either. Mostly old photos, sometimes film or slides & occasional tintype.

I am NOT sure I understand what you are saying highlighted in red above. If you click on the filename below any picture from Flickr that will take you to Flickr. Once at Flickr click again on the image and that will zoom you in. Is this what you were trying to tell me?

Ok, I was just looking here on the forum. I just meant I can only magnify the image slightly, you'd be able to zoom in tighter on the original on your computer.

If you are viewing any image on this forum or other web pages you can add an extension to Firefox or Chrome that allows you to zoom in to infinity using your mouse. For Firefox I use "Zoom Image" and for Chrome I use "Drag to Resize Images". Just go to add-ons and search for those extensions and install. Both work quite well and allow you to zoom in and pan an image inside the browser window. Here is an example of a section of photo #3 where I zoomed in to view. Obviously you are limited by the resolution of the image and at a certain point it becomes pixelated.

Re: zooming apps... this forum only allows images up to a certain dimension, even when hosted elsewhere, so zooming in only gets you so far. However, a link on the bottom of some images might bring you to the native web image source and which might, and I emphasize, might, let you see an image in the fullest size the photographer has uploaded or allowed to be viewed. You usually have to click the magnifyer (+) if that is an option.

Without such an add-on, most operating systems include an internal command [ctl] + [+] which will zoom the viewable page in 10% increments. Not as nice, but might help.

I limit viewing at Smugmug to something in between the size allowed here and native resolution of the image. Digging deeper into posted images here (without such links) and then to the OP's website often yields a much larger version for closer scrutiny.

I think the idea was just to zoom in a little to see an object without having to click on links or open another window.

It is not the same for Glass Negatives vs. modern day cameras with very high resolution. Glass Negatives have very little resolution.

What you are able to zoom in on a Glass Negatives using Flickr is the same as me zooming in at home. It also varies glass negative to a different glass negative. The one with the 2 bicyclists does zoom in quite nicely!

I tried doing what Dave3222 did with the same picture using Photoshop Elements 2021. I zoomed in to 400% - yes it became pixelated and blurry but it was still readable. However when I saved it at 400% then reviewed the newly saved imaged I did not see any change in size. Clearly I am not an expert with Photoshop Elements 2021. Also the final SIZE of the image did not change.

The size limit to this forum is 1600 Pixels in either direction, 1600X1600

I can download any image to FLICKR FULL SIZE but when I then select an image from Flickr to show at POTN I have a dropdown window where I can select what MAX size to show selecting 1600X 'x' amount.

I looked through the thread again but I didn't see anything about how you are scanning these glass plates. Are you using a scanner or a DSLR? This thread is so interesting that I started doing some research and found there are various ways to scan and process the negatives. Could you talk about your process. Please keep posting these great images.

Hi Dave,

Come to think of it I never thought about discussing how I processed these glass negatives. I am glad you brought this to my attention!!

I have had these glass negatives since the early 70's but back then there was no easy way that I knew of to do anything with them. In 2007 I bought an Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner specifically for scanning these negatives. Oh how easy and simple this turned out to be. There are a number of film scanners you can buy today but all they will scan for the most part (to my limited knowledge) is scanning like 35mm negatives or slide film. The 4990 will scan any negatives up to 8 3/4 X 12 so quite large really! These negatives I have, as I mentioned before are (two sizes) 3 1/4 X 4 1/4 and also 4 X 5 plus the 4990 will do every day one sided scanning of papers or books.

HERE (external link) is the 4990 that I purchased from Amazon in 2007. This scanner was also my very FIRST purchase from Amazon.

Below are 2 pictures I just took of my scanner. Shown in the LID of the scanner is the reflective document mat (white screen).

Remove the document mat so light will go THRU the negative in the 2nd photo.

The 4990 is no longer available. If you type in Epson 4990 Scanner it will come up with the 4490 scanner.

Dave, I hope this helps!
