my Dad tells me that school photos used to be done on a camera that "scanned" left to right - the blokes on the end would often run around the back & appear at both ends of the photo.

Those cameras were called cirkut cameras and there are still people shooting them today. They had a geared base that scanned a scene at the same speed onto large format roll film. Film width ranges from 5 to 16 inches. There is an excellent book of cirkut camera images called America By the Yard

Very interesting! Thank you for telling us this information! Do you own this book?

Back to more Glass Negatives....

The next few photos were taken in my wife's and Albert's home town of Albion, Indiana.

This home belonged to my wife's grandparents on her father's side Harry and Bertha Black; Albert was a brother to Harry
Albert lived next door to his brother with an alley between them.
I LOVE the WOODEN sidewalk across the street from the house!!
This house is on Main St. (also St. Rd 8) of Albion.

Some children in front of a different house. Sadly we do not know who the children are.

This is a smoke house behind same house - not there today.

The next 2 pictures is a tennis court that used to be behind that house not there today.

This next house is again on Main Street East of the first house. This was actually the first house that Harry and Bertha lived in before the brick house. Harry farmed on this property farming the fields also having several milking cows. They moved when Harry became dis-abled.

The white house many decades later was moved still on the same farm property but back maybe 1/8 to maybe 1/4 mile to a small pond area.
Milking barn behind the white house.

What a step back in time Charles.

I gather you've been to those places from your comments.
Do the houses still look same? Kept their facades?

Google Street view would be interesting if nothing else

Albion is 40 miles south of where we live, so yes I have been there many many times after marrying my wife Judy.

Speaking of Google Street view I had the same idea and just got done finding the same house!

It would be cool and interesting to take the same images now, framed the same as closely as you can match the old images, and show the "then" and "now" images.

Or you could try something like this:

Surprised there hasn't been a lot of change done to the house, at least on the outside.
Glad to see that.

Wow Charles! What a wonderful thread with great imagery, information and history. What a treasure to have the camera and the images/negatives along with the personal connection to that history! This is one of the best threads I've had the pleasure of following in quite a while. Thanks for sharing it all!

I have done that on a few images coming up!

Is that the same tree out front as a tiny one pictured a bazillion years ago?
