Some time ago, in BP-511 discussions, I said I would report back to the Forum...*what* was inside a 'dead' BP-511. [Maybe this is Common Knowledge now... forgive me if it is]

Last week I finally had a BP-511 die. A "MHBP-511" to be exact...$30 as I recall. I mean Zero Volts ! A few minutes ago I pried it apart. Interesting. As expected, there were two 'cells' bonded together at one end of the pair. What WAS interesting was that across the other end was a small printed circuit board. On that board
are twelve (12) surface mount caps or something, as well as two (2) integrated circuits [eight terminals]. The leads that the camera touch go to the board, not the battery. The two smaller leads also go to the board, and are marked 'ID'... which confirms my thought that the True Canon Multiple charger checks for 'ethic purity' before letting it work!

Each cell 'makes' voltage, so it looks like whenever a BP-511 'fails', it is likely the electronics in the brown/grey case rather than the battery itself.

Useless information, but interesting... at least, to me...

Almost four months ago I started the thread Post your disassembled equipment pics.

Only two pictures were posted after mine and one of that images is now just a red X.

Would you like to post a picture of your disassembled battery? Although it is not the original Canon battery I’m still interested.

No need to post in the above mentioned old thread, better continue posting here to illustrate your post.

Hope you can post it, but if it is not possible, never mind, your description was interesting enough.

All lithium-ion batteries have ICs.

The actual cells are quite brittle compared to Ni-Cad and Nimh batteries, the little IC is there to detect reverse polarity, heat, over-charging, short circuit and report amount of charge left to some little display on the battery (if they're posh). It also prevents a complete discharge of the cells.

All that work in a battery...

That's quite interesting, rpolitsr ... I am a little bit scared to open my G6, but I'm also curious :)
I'll think about that!

I think there are two ways:

- images in attachments / emmbedded images:
https://photography-on-the.net …faq_vb_attachment_explain

but... read before this post:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/announcement.php?f=9

- images located elsewhere (i.e. on a space of your own) and then "linked" in a post

[open a new reply, click on the little "Insert image" icon, then specify a URL (internet address) of an already existing image]

bye
Fabio

Hi 283CID

Blacksmurf already posted the links to forum FAQ and Senior Moderatror CyberDyneSystems recommendations.

Just two important facts about embedding images in attachments:

  • The forum recommends images with 800 pixels as maximum longest side size, although 640x480 is a widely used format and big enough to fill a 800x600 monitor screen.
  • The maximum allowed size for the jpg file is 100KB (compulsory)

For linked images, I usually implement the same restrictions in my images to allow reasonably fast file download with a slow dial-up connection.

You need to resize your images before posting. Photoshop Save for Web is the best tool. There are many other image editors that will do a very good work in resize.

Let us know if you need additional information.

Thanks superscully, I need to update my knowledge on Lithium-Ion batteries. Your info was a good start.

I'll think about that!

As I said, I disassemble most of my electronic equipment if it is not sealed.
The digital cameras are precise optical instruments, disassembly always implies the possibility of irreversible damage, so I also hold my own curiosity to a reasonable limit :(
