Since when did "unboxing" become a thing in equipment reviews? What's the value except to add filler to the review? What am I missing?

I agree with you, really strange videos, especially when that is the entire video

Part of me feels like it was a way for people who really didn’t have anything useful to contribute to still be able to make a video. It seems silly to me, but I guess some people like “unboxing” videos.

Maybe they get income from ads connected to the videos.

The only value I can see to 'unboxing' video is that if you get a 'white box' product at lower price you can see that you got everything included in the factory box.

occasionally it's useful to know exactly what's included in the box when you buy stuff, but otherwise I see little or no value in watching any of these.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Unboxing videos have been around for a very long time. Here (external link) is an unboxing video for the 350D XT. :) I find them useful for some things, like when I was shopping for an aquarium filter, but for lenses, they are pretty useless.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

There are a number of items where an unboxing video is useless. People were making unboxing videos for t-shirts at one point. I bought a pair of earbuds recently and there were more unboxing videos than reviews. I mostly shoot with film cameras are there are a number of unboxing videos where the camera is being taken out of a box that the seller packaged the camera in so it’s not even the box that the camera would have come in when new.

I don't know. With all the shipping problems lately, maybe they're just excited something arrived. "Look, I got one! From FedEx, even. Come share my special day."
