I went out shooting this morning with my 100-400 mkii on my 1dx mkiii. After ten minutes my arms were shaking and hours laters, I am sore. I usually can shoot from my car, using my window frame to support the weight. But, in those times I want to venture out, the weight of this camera and lens has become too much. I am a getting older female and wonder from those who have experienced the weight differences between both camera bodies with the 100-400 lens, is it worth the switch in bodies or would just adding a tripod to my set up be better? I find tripods limiting, so rarely use one. Unless there is a specific tripod head that would make any restrictions much less. Any one with a similar experience? Recommendations? Ty…

Hi,

Have you considered simply a monopod with a tilt head? Way less bulky to move around with than a tripod, and provides the same relief on your arms.

Alternatively, a tripod with a gimbal (instead of a ballhead) is going to give you the least restrictive movement while being completely balanced and able to go hands off and stay stable and safe.

Regarding the weight, even a 1lb difference is not going to change that the 100-400 you're using has weight and length. The length is what is giving you the most grief because as the length of it moves away from your body it creates a moment arm which your arms then feel that is much more weight, effectively, than it actually is. Think of holding a long hollow light weight PVC pipe and how hard it is to hold up from just one side (that's the moment arm you're experiencing).

I'd second the idea of trying a monopod but the R5 would be a very nice upgrade for you.

I think you would need to replace both the camera body and the lens to notice a difference in weight but the body does contribute more to the total difference.

1DIII (2.94 lbs) + 100-400 (3.46 lbs) = 6.4 lbs

R5 (1.63 lbs) + RF 100-500 (3 lbs) = 4.63 lbs

If you could get away with the RF 100-400 you could shave another 1.5 lbs off the total with the R5.

IF you put an R5 on your 100-400 you save approximately 1 + 1/3 lb in weight.....let that sink in

basically 1lb

Thats nothing

If using the weight of a 100-400 is bothering you then you have 2 options

something like a monopad to support the weight or get in a gym and build up a little more muscle. Personally, I feel a monopad would be your best option

Thank you for your responses. I agree wholeheartedly...a monopod is the option I will be working on. I dont want to give up my camera. And a gym? LOL!! Not an option! : )
