First try at BIF

I went out to a place where they had been seeing some eagles. Only saw one as it was flying by so tried a BIF shot. Kind of an overcast day and apparently I didn't have the right settings for the conditions.

Not sure what I should have done differently?

You’ve gotta start somewhere, right? ߘ. Looks like you got good focus on it, in spite of conditions, which is the harder part of tracking w/ a moving subject.

For those conditions, Iʢd bring the shutter down to around 1/800 and kick the ISO up to 3200, maybe even 4000 depending on just how dark it really was. Honestly, the last, like, 3 years or so, I just shot M + Auto ISO with that body/lens combo and set camera to Spot metering if shooting backlit subjects like this one. I’d usually try to keep the shutter between 1/640 and 1/1250, since IS on that lens is so good.

Remember that the sky will tell your camera to expose for it inserts of the bird, so you either have to go to manual or use exposure compensation to tell the camera to overexpose the sky just to expose the bird properly.

I wondered it that is what happened, too much grey sky with dark bird against it.
