Ok I have a 90d and a 6dmll. My flash is a fp flashpoint zoom li-on x r2 flash. It works on both if connected directly to the camera. I can't figure out how to connect wirelessly. I do have the channels synced on channel 1. I tried following the instructions from canon and flashpoint and they seem about worthless. Watched a couple YouTube videos but with different flashes on how to set the canon camera up for a wireless flash but I've had no luck. Any suggestions would be helpful

Is there a test button on the transmitter? If you push it does the flash go off? If true, is the transmitter designed to work with Canon cameras?

That's about all I've got.

Do you have a trigger on your camera?

There are different ways to fire a flash remotely. Are you trying to do this by radio frequency or optically?

There is not a test button. The manufacturer claims that it is compatible with my model of Canon

I would assume by frequency. I've set the flash on channel 1 and labeled it as flash A. Then on my camera under flashing settings I put to transmit on channel 1 and to use flash A.

The compatability of the Flashpoint remote flash trigger transmitter may work when attached to the Canon dSLR, but that is NOT implying that
Flashpoint R2 flash trigger wireless is compatible with Canon wireless for flash trigger!

"The proprietary TTL enabled 2.4GHz R2 Radio Remote System radio triggers transmits atop a Canon EOS body with AF assist and works with the complete family of Flashpoint Speedlights, "

'Canon wireless' trigger for flash is not directly compatible with 'Flashpoint R2 wireless' trigger for flash... you need to have the Flashpoint R2 tranmitter in the Canon hotshoe.
Similarly, the Godox wireless trigger is not compatible with Canon flash (which use Canon wireless trigger) altough it may be 'Canon ETTL compatible'

I would assume by frequency.

There are two ways to shoot wirelessly: radio frequency (RF) and optically (by the light from a flash on your camera).

The best way by far to control a remote flash is by RF. The range is long and you don't have to point the sensor to the master flash. To use RF, you need an RF transmitter (called a trigger) that is made for Canon cameras and works with Flashpoint flashes. If you don't have such a trigger, then you won't be able to use RF to control your flash.

The other way is optical. To do that, you fire a flash on your camera. You can use the built-in flash or an external flash mounted in the hot shoe or Canon's ST-E2 unit. The remote flash senses the light and fires too. You need to follow the instructions in the camera and flash manuals to get this to work.

Thanks for all the replies. It is apparent that I have not been properly educated on flashes. Didn't know I needed a transmitter. This is all new to me and I don't have anyone locally to help. Would the following transmitter work?

This will pictorially depict the flash situation which is being dealt with. The issue is that while different brands of flashes claim 'Canon eTTL compatible' for preflash and automatic flash power control when mounted on the Canon camera hotshoe, there is not a single remote flash 'radio communication' standard...'Canon radio' remote is not compatible with 'Pocket Wizard radio' remot or 'Godox radio' remote.

What I have not depicted is that EARLY Canon flash (e.g. Canon 580EX) did NOT have any remote radio capability, while later models of Canon flash had an included radio remote receiver (e.g. Canon 600EX-RT)

That's not a transmitter. It's a receiver.

I don't know your exact situation, and don't want to make suggestions that might be wrong. But what I use is the Godox Xpro transmitter (external link). It goes into my Canon camera hotshoe. When properly configured (for Channel and Group), it fires my Godox flashes. You should phone the merchant of your choice and tell them exactly what you have so that you get the right item.

There should be a way to trigger your remote flash just by using your camera's built-in flash. So far I haven't figured out how.

Followup post.

On your 90D, Menu > Camera 1, Flash control > Built-in flash settings.
- Flash mode: Manual
- Wireless func., second selection
- Channel 1

Now power up your off-camera flash and set it to Slave function, Channel 1 of course. It should fire when the built-in flash fires. This works in Manual only.

There might be some settings I have neglected because there are lots, and my settings might not match yours, so it might take some experimenting to get it to work.

I think this works in Manual only, so it is not very handy. You would probably prefer the trigger.
