I attended a photo workshop on painting with light by Susan Magnano as part of the Outsiders Conference last weekend in Kanab UT. The workshop was from 10 PM -1 AM.

Here are a few of my results. I was not planning on attending a night workshop so the fastest lens I had with me was the RF 24-105 f4. Most everyone else was shooting a 2.8 lens so I had to use higher iso, I still think the R5 did well.

I thought maybe a few would be interested in seeing the results.

Fun workshop. Found I need a better tripod (already purchased) and better weather gear. Snowed most of the weekend and by Sunday night everything was mucky and very cold. Need gloves designed for photography. We were all freezing by the end of the workshop. We really could not complain too much, on Saturday night Paul Nicklen (Nat Geo) presented the Conference Keynote about the challenges photographing in the Artic and Antarctic.

Here are a few more images. Fun technique, Susan's images in her portfolio are amazing, she does the for big commercial shoots. My efforts are pretty armature, but fun.

Thanks, so do I. What I am amazed at is the clarity of the pictures. This was my first night shoot with my R5. I did not have a fast lens. Everyone else was shooting at f2.8 or faster and mostly at 3200 ISO. I had to shoot between IOS 6400 and 8000. The time duration on the photos is between 15 - 30 seconds.

I shot RAW+JPEG. I first downloaded the JPEGs and I thought the images were great. The next day I started working with the RAWs in DXO and Photoshop and I am amazed at the details that came out in the photos. Still working a little on the images.

Yes, the technique was a lot of fun. I have never tried anything like this and actually this was my first paid to attend photo workshop. I was a little limited since I did not plan on attending a workshop when I attended the Outsiders Conference. I had limited photo gear with me. I was actually surprised how well the final images turned out. We did a AF, then turned AF off for the actual images. I will be trying to do more of this in the future. A friend said he did something similar with sparklers.
