Flightless ant-mimic Ichneumonid wasp with problems. Gelis sp. wasp with a missing antenna and a lot of what I assume are parasitic mites.

Taken using a 2X microscope objective on a sony A6000 body and focus stacked.

Very nice, I don't think those mites are always parasitic some can be phoretic and in cases of bees and beetles they can even be symbiotic.

Thanks for the comments davholla- yes they might be phoretic mites.

Very interesting! I know there are various insects that have become wingless as one adaptation to being active in the cold. This being bc flying would take too much energy.

Interesting captures. Is the objective better than using your MP-E65 on the Sony via adapter?

Thanks for the comments Mark :) Yes it does seem a bit of a weird adaption.

Thanks Toby. I'm still using my MPE-65 on a 5Dmk2 body that refuses to die but the microscope objective (which cost £25) I do not think is as good as the MPE optically (less contrast and some distortion at the edges) but it is so much easier to use and I can easily swap around objectives from 2x to 4X to 10X if warranted although using a 10X objective on a camera body handheld is not easy. Perhaps the main attraction apart from ease of use is being able to get much lower shooting angles because of the much smaller lens diameter.

I don't think that in this case it is wingless because of energy problems. I would guess because of where its prey is although I am not an expert.
