That's how long there has been a red fox family living on this piece of property (no, not mine, but close by). And this year continues the tradition. This year's babies have been born, we believe, and they are stashed under an old barn. This is Mom, guarding the entryway. Ain't she sweet?

Your fox series are always a treat, Ian. And she is sweet indeed.

Thanks very much Levina. I’m already looking forward to an interesting summer with the new family.

Always fun to see, Ian! I'm jealous of you simply for having AN opportunity to shoot so closely, much less so regularly and for so long. :)

Thanks Ira. The pair that inherit the site stick around there all winter, so it's fun to know we'll likely have another family.

Is this den a family home handed down through the generations? I don't suppose the lifespan of a coyote is anywhere close to 17 years.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Well first off it’s a fox, not a coyote :-P . But yes, the tradition seems to be that one of the kits from one year retains ownership of the property as a whole, which has 3 or 4 dens, and hangs around, claiming it as their home. The rest of the kits move away in September or October. Then the new “owner” finds a mate over the winter and the cycle continues. They seem to have it down to a science.
