I had the exact same situation happening a few years ago when I was in a park nearby. Two buzzards being chased away by crows and me shooting straight up, trying to find an opening in the foliage. And my settings all wrong. I posted the story and shots here on POTN and remember Sid replying, saying he had the same thing happen to him! So you’re not alone in this, Jan. But, you came away with the shots, so you did good!

whoa! you've got a memory haven't you? I don't recall that strangely as I usually have a very good memory. But you're right, Jan is not alone and he got the shots! :)

That was my main problem too, locking the tripod head sorts that out until you want to move or zoom a bit either way, it's a nightmare!

Thanks Levina, I've a feeling she will have selected her mate by now, they lay eggs in March so hopefully that's why she's back now.

Thanks again, your shots of the magpie are a great behavioural series, good job catching him at it. :)

cheers! :)

Thanks, Sid. And I hope there will be eggs in March!

These are always fun shots. The colours are different on this shoveler. Not a female I don't think

Good grief, that was from the times I only put a long lens on occaisionally, I'm glad that photo's not available to see now! Clearly why I forgot all about it!

Very well remembered though and looking back at shots from then has made me appreciate the improvement I, albeit slight, have made (gear mainly  )

A blast from the past as they say. Pretty cool though.

You found the Cormorants! Well done. Nice DOF in that pic.

The gull looks kinda sweet. Which is a bit of a strange thing to say about a gull…

It's a male that hasn't completely molted into breeding plumage. Around here they all look like this in late fall with a very few this far into winter. The yellow eye and dark bill identify the males regardless of plumage.
