Was the bird stationary or is the photo from a burst where it just landed? I know the little creatures are light as a feather (or bunch of feathers actually) but I would not expect those petals of the tullips to be that rigid to be perched on... (Well, I know even less of flowers than I know of birds ;-)a ) . And a great photo btw.

@ Jan

The petals are rigid and can easily hold an wagtail when they sitting on it.
The flowers are low, and to get the whole background out of focus yellow ,i had to go low.
Sneaked out of the car and made this picture handheld.

You even imaged the insect it is chasing.

Amazing isn’t it? And they were really very far away.

Ah good.

I’m curious, Sid, what happens after the three months? Will junior leave or maybe even be chased away?

They stop being dependant on parents at around three months which is around the time they will disperse to find their own territories. Bear in mind that tawny owls in general are fiercely territorial so the youngsters probably do have some encouragement to make themselves scarce!

Sid!!
I shot Swifts from my window! I did! :-D

I swear, I had absolutely no intention of doing so. But the new camera arrived today and I was taking some quick test shots from home when suddenly a couple of bullets were shooting up into the sky: Swifts! So I pointed the camera at them and took shots. They're not good as the birds were high up in the sky and very far away, plus it's been raining so much here and the air is damp and well, it's not good. Still, the new camera locked on just the same and tracked them.

Just for fun, one shot, if only to prove that I really did shoot Swifts from my window. On top of the difficult conditions, it's also a huge crop and I shot in jpeg as my old Mac can't open the raw files. I don't know, I think it's kinda cool. :-P

Yay, I knew you would, that's nice timing too, with the wings and tail spread and the prey about to be caught. The magic window wins again and now with the super new cam you'll be unstoppable!! :-)
BTW the first swifts back here have occupied one of the nest boxes and were back and forth today with bits and pieces for their nest :)

Probably yes. :-D

It’s interesting though. Take your common coot. These birds are very territorial and will fight any other coots stepping over their threshold. But they are very caring parents. When the chicks are small the parents’ whole countenance changes. I find it quite moving. Anyway, the young from a first brood will help raise the young from subsequent broods. Which, for a fiercely territorial bird is maybe remarkable.

Herons on the other hand, who are not territorial (they just don’t tolerate other herons in their personal bubble) become downright hostile to their offspring once they have fledged.

Knowing that the Swifts are back, I went to a location in the harbour, close to my home. There are a few big, old, stately buildings where both House Martins and Swifts breed. I go there every year. So I went there yesterday and sure enough, the Martins have arrived; the sky is filled with them. And there were a number of Swifts flying by too. I came home with a number of really nice pics. Except I can’t process them as my Mac is too old. I have tweaked that Mac Pro to its limit but I can’t access the new camera’s raw files. I also can’t use DPP or Adobe’s DNG converter as it requires a version that my Mac doesn’t meet system requirements for. The R6 was the last camera my OS (Mojave) could handle.

I have tried several image viewers and converters and none do a good job. All of them convert the files to 8 bits, some convert to a lesser resolution, some gave me purple tiffs because they can’t read the embedded colour profile.

Houston, I have a problem.

Just back from a sister-in-laws in Yorkshire and managed a few shots of our usual suspects though the weather was variable. Which had to include a robin! The young blackbird clearly shows that they are part of the thrush family.

That's a nice series, Chris. I particularly like the Chaffinch. But what a variety of birds!

By the way, one of the last things I photographed with the R6 was this Greenfinch in the park last week. I actually think it was a first for me.

Thanks Levina. Surprisingly I didn't see a greenfinch. What we did see however was Exhibit A when we got back from a walk!

The perpetrator being a relative of this one (with the "who me" expression! I photographed in my garden previously. As my wife says, they have to eat and have chicks to feed. Pigeon in my photo but it was only a small bird in the other one, maybe a chaffinch.
