Pardon me Levina, but what is a "hobby" that flies??

Charles, the Eurasian hobby is a type of falcon.
Here’s a link to the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasian_hobby (external link)

The only "hobby" I know about as defined from Google:

an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.
"her hobbies are reading and gardening"

A hobby could also be photography!!!

Thank you for your definition AND the LINK!!

Hello everybody. I just learned that people were wondering about my absence. Sorry about that. I’m having some health issues. I can’t do much of anything at the moment as I’m in bed mostly as the painkillers knock me out most of the time. Sorry for not being able to help keep this thread going at the moment. I have some hope things will improve in time. Not sure, but regardless, I will try to visit more, and be more active (in between naps :-P ).

I love all the contributions. You guys are all posting wonderful images.

I like Pippan’s suggestion as WBofA is a great thread, also rather intimate with nice interaction. It really is the reason I started this thread. We’re like sister threads! :-P

Thank you all for caring.

I am not qualified to contribute to your thread but I follow it closely. mostly because I've seen your comments and thoughts about other threads and yours are very much in line with mine.

Anyways, so sorry to read about what's going on. Please get well and don't even doubt you will. Take your time and I'm sure the others here will continue to carry on here.

sincerely.

Mike

Nah, it’s all good, Patrick. En dank je.

Lovely pics. The finch looks especially good. I usually see females. And always so shy.

Congrats on the 100-500! It’s a pretty brilliant lens. Did you shoot with it already?

I love that you help out the dog/cat shelter! We would call that a mitswa. :-P

In the summer there are few finches but they are starting to come back(when the harvest is in) but can't say there's much difference in male/female, here are a few from earlier this year.

The male has so much more colour on him with all those red/browns (roestbruin), whereas the female is a rather dull looking brown bird. Maybe the male looses some of his colour when out of breeding season? No idea really. Nice that you caught them in flight. Never easy with small(er) birds.

Now go shoot with your new toy!

Had to google mitswa;-)a They were not happy when they lost their vet but they gained a photographer :p

A mitswa is a good deed.

How so they lost their vet? Were you the vet and you retired? What did I miss?

So sorry to hear of your health issues. I am also going through some issues, not fun to get old. My treatments have side effects, but at least I'm not bed-ridden. My very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Levina. I have always enjoyed your posts, feel like you're a good friend.

The female finch does have some colour, esp. on the lower back but you have to be close to see it. The colours are more vibrant in the mating season(esp. the male(of course-show off :p) but don't disappear, just a bit faded the rest of the year.

And yes, I was(still am but voluntary unemployed at this moment, we're on sabbatical leave but not retired)) a veterinarian and the local shelter was one of our clients. For years we helped them(voluntary) with motherless kittens, my wife bottle fed them and I took pictures(and helped my wife and took care of medical problems) which they liked so they hinted if I wanted to take photo's for their website but then I didn't have the time. Now I do have the time so...

You are definitely one of my friends here, Stan. We’ve known one another for 14 years! I’m so sorry you are having health issues as well. The old saying that misery needs company doesn’t doesn’t give me any solace here whatsoever. Growing old is no fun at all, I agree. Thank you for your kind words. And in turn I hope you will have a full and speedy recovery. Life is so much better when everything works as it should!

These are from the mouth of Afon Peris, Llansanffraid, West Wales, looking for waders is a bit alien for me but I did enjoy it.
