Someone offered me this camera at a good price, and I'm thinking of buying it. Based on your ACTUAL EXPERIENCE with the 1Dx, would you consider it just about worn out and on it's last legs, or is it only moderate use for this camera body?

If I remember correctly the 1dx has an expected shutter life of 250k. There is still some life in it, however anything made by man can fail at any time. The question becomes whether the price is right and the condition of the body generally.

Just run in. I have a 1DS2 that still works perectly, 18 years after manufacture. I don't know what the shutter count is. Unless there's a known issue, eg 1D2 had some shutters fail around 30-40k, 1D shutters can go to 1 million.

Shutter count is not a really good metric to evaluate a individual camera. It does give you some idea on how long it's been used but you really have no idea how hard it was used. More importantly, you cannot evaluate how much shutter life you have left. You could buy it and have it fail on the next press, or get several thousand actuations, or get a million. You just don't know. Do you know it's history? Type of photographer it's coming from, like a wedding or portrait photog as opposed to a sports or wildlife photog. A studio camera most likely has been used much more gingerly whereas a sports/wildlife camera might have some hard miles on it. Also, how good is the deal? KEH has them between $1500 down to $900 for an ugly one.

I'll let you know, mine arrives on Friday. 220,000 clicks on it, battery and charger, doesn't look like its fallen down a mountainside, for £561 (ebay). When it fails, I'll just buy another one, prolly for less.

Mike, it didn't.

And, I called Canon (USA) today and they no longer service the 1Dx.

I like Bildeberg's outlook. When this one goes tits up, I'll probably just buy another one for even less.

same goes for the 1D mkIV I got for £350. Ridiculous amount of tech you can get these days for peanuts.
I just checked and on release the 1dx rrp was £5300 :p

This is a horrible site to use in any decision process. It's been around for years and is so poorly designed as to make anything there irrelevant. Some of my issues with the site are:
1. Anyone can enter data and no one verifies. You can enter anything you want as many times as you want.
2. Reporting working shutter actuation is irrelevant. For instance, I buy a camera new, report it working. A month later, still working, 6 months later, still working. I have reported three times for the same camera. The count all three as three cameras.
3. Even if you just look at the failure cases (the ones that could matter) the numbers are all over the place. for instance, the 1D Mark III average time to failure is 61,166.8 and the Rebel XT is 234,317.5. So based on this sites data, the XT is 4 times more durable than the 1DIII. Pass your smell test?

There are many other issues I have with their data but bottom line, don't use any of it to make a decision. It's worthless. As photographers we shouldn't be pointing others towards it when they are trying to decide. It gives them wrong data.

Canon has released shutter count ratings for most of their cameras above the Rebel line. Only some of the Rebels have official ratings available.

Camera Model Shutter Rating
Canon 1D X Mark II 500,000
Canon 5D Mark II/III/IV 150,000
Canon 6D Mark II 100,000
Canon 7D Mark II 200,000
Canon 60D/70D/80D 100,000

I bought a used 1Dx a year ago for 650 Euro (about 690 USD) with a count of 260.000.
I did not hesitate for one milli second. The camera is a beast and built like a tank.
Now I am at 296.000 and the 1Dx is still going strong.
The usual wear is on the outside, not on the inside.
