I bought a used Canon 135mm F2 from B&H and it came with a EW78C lens hood. Which is a pedal hood. Not the ET78II which is the correct one.
The EW78C fits and actually looks better. But I'm not sure if it will provide the amount of flare protection that's needed.
I havent noticed any issues but I haven't shot with it a lot yet. Anybody have experieance with this combo?

It's as simple as that there is disturbing light that may come in from an angle the intended hood will block, but this one will not. In that case you are out of luck.
Otherwise it doesn't matter.

Have you tried asking B&H if they would do a swap for the correct hood? Those guys have always been awesome for me.

I ended up purchasing the correct lens hood from B&H.
Thanks
