Saw this dove sitting in the tree outside my study window just before the storm hit.

Testing the EOS R7 with the 800mm f11 (effective 1280mm) uncropped and surprisingly it came out well despite it being so far away and at 1/500sec at ISO5000. Adjusted in iPad 12.9 using PS Express for contrast, colour and removal of noise.

For focus accuracy and ISO noise - it is my view that this body works so much better than my old 7D2.

Great shot! It does appear, at least on my monitor, to be pretty extensively processed? I presumed some layering to blur out some things and sharpen others?

I tried the RF800 and RF600 side by side and had trouble getting BIF in the FOV with the 800, the 600 was tough enough. I also found at least my version of the RF600 seemed just a bit sharper, mostly at a distance at the airport so may have been turbulence being more noticeable with the longer focal length

I do like it better than my 7D2 but since I mostly used the 90D, I have to say that to me I find it is a 90D Mark II

Looks like slightly less dead end than M43 for birding :)

I am unable to capture any BIF using the 800mm. The AF is too slow and it is awful hard to put the subject into the viewfinder. I even tried using a laser red dot but works only if it is a slow flying circling eagle or large bird.

Much as I would like the reach of the 800 I agree that I can't get birds or even high flying planes in the FOV

No, the narrow FOV makes that nigh impossible. And the limited focus area in the center makes it even worse as it effectively narrows the FOV farther. The 800/11 is not a BIF lens.

The future is coming too slow ... by now we should have had 200MP FF cameras with global shutters and crop modes that show the whole frame, for tracking. That would make many types of tracking much easier. It is a pain that the quest for pixels-on-subject often results in too-narrow-a-view.

It's a great sparrow/warbler/wren, etc lens, though, unless they are too close.

That's not the future.
Future is when your camera gets up at 5AM, attaches an appropriate lens and TC to itself, goes to a birding place and returns before noon with tack sharp photos and uploads them for post processing to an AI powered machine, that then throws the final ones onto your screen at the dining room wall when you are having your lunch for that day. :p :p

I was thinking about this very thing a few posts ago. They need to put a sight on the thing ... you know, just a manual, metal pre-sighting peep hole which will allow you to get close, then find the object through the lens.

You might be able to do something like this yourself, even just temporarily. Find some small-ish tube, like a few inches of thin walled 1/2 in PVC and tape it to the lens ... just an experiment. Get it positioned to where when you look through the "pre-sight," the center of it is what you'll be on when you look through the camera. It shouldn't be too hard to do.

You're welcome!

I'll get with Canon later for my royalties.

The push-pull 100-400 V1 was the ultimate BIF lens. Acquire the subject at low zoom and easy zoom in for the tight shot without losing the bird in the process. I really miss that lens.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I miss the push-pull too. At one time my main lenses were the 28-300L and 100-400L v1, which both have it. Now I'm always turning the zoom ring the wrong way. I think the 100-400L II can be used as push-pull though. I may have to try it.
