I've been looking into these adapters, thinking ahead of when I might dip my toe into the R ecosystem.

There are 3 adapters:

Mount Adapter EF-EOS R: $99

Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R: $199

Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-in Variable ND Filter A:

I don't think I need to spend money for the one with the ND filter, since I already have ND filters that go on my lenses. is there any advantage to this setup?

How does the control ring work, and is it worth the extra hundred bucks?

Thanks!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Control ring works just like any other dial on the cameras and is completely configurable in function. However, the placement when using anything but short lenses means it's fairly awkward to engage; I would just go with the baseline adapter, and suggest saving a bit more by getting one of the 3rd party versions, like, these.

Just look for ones that have metal bayonettes and electronic connector; that they haven't cheaped out with plastic mounts to shave costs.

Meike makes a control ring rf adapter for $109, I would suggest that first if you get one. Built well and has a rear weather seal gasket.

I love the heck out of the control ring adapter used with the EOS R because it can make good use of an additional control.

But I understand that the R5 and R6 have more than sufficient controls on the body (although I find it hard to believe that any camera can have too many programmable controls).

I prefer the placement of the control ring in the fixed position close to the body on the adapter rather than the inconsistent location of the control ring on RF lenses. I'm fine with that location.

I use the control ring for exposure compensation in auto modes and ISO in manual.

Yes, but they are in stock at Amazon I believe. I didn't realize it, but it appears to be firmware updatable too. I have their standard adapter, it has a black rear seal, and nothing to update (straight passthrough I am sure).
