I venture over into SW Idaho every Memorial Day to visit, and in the last couple of years, a pair of Sharp-shinned hawks have moved into his neighborhood and utilize the massive Sycamore there as a regular perch/feeding area. These are some of the most DILIGAF raptors I've ever encountered, with one of them allowing us to drive up directly next to in on the fence. I finally encountered one down low and out of the leaves this year.

There is a very small bit of gore, just as a warning for those sensitive. I think it was a sparrow of some kind based on the third shot, but not sure.

They are quite vocal and surprisingly "squeaky" when they make a call.

You can see the bulging eyes/parakeet face shape that was one of my primary ID points here; some other, non-posted angles show the hood continuing down the back of its neck, as well.

I've been caught with my OWN foot in my mouth; but never someone else's :p

Just letting me know it saw me and wasn't giving up its perch. Thoroughly crapped on the car shortly thereafter, as well :-P

This bird is extremely acclimated to people being around and does not pause hunting or eating when we're around. We were extremely thrilled to be able to watch it come and go while we were just lounging around the yard and visiting; and this old growth tree offers amazing cover for the birds and amazingly clear/clean access to viewing.

All taken with the R5 and RF 800 f/11. Some of my current editing software is mangling EXIF; so if you're interested in any of that info, just ping me and I'll pull it out for you.

Very nice set, a biologist doing his dissertation on hawk species tolerance of nesting in or very near urban areas gave a talk for our local Audubon. Apparently some species of hawk will choose a variety of trees to nest others have specific preferences. He got his data from maps of hawk nesting sites over the years. He used this information to show how hawks tolerate the change in environment. One species that seemed to be favorably inclined to urban habitats was the Cooper's hawk. I don't remember if he had data on sharp-shin. His data came from Eastern Ventura Co. here in So Calif.

Photography is my only pathological addiction; hopefully it won't drive me to something worse.

Thanks! It was quite interesting to see just how little concern the thing had for us and our activity in its presence.
