Just one more interesting find:

"as there are really only two different sizes of USM Ring motors by canon, the 72mm and the 77mm"

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1389786/0 (external link)

EDIT, an additional supporting find:

"Canon Ring Type USM comes in two sizes, either 62 mm or 77 mm in outside diameter. "

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1352622 (external link)

The second referenced link from the link directly above says:

"This is the M-1 ring-USM, which is pretty much the standard. Many common lenses have this very motor, from the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 and 85 f/1.8, to the 300 f/4L and 70-200 f/2.8L.

The 62mm M-1 is dwarfed by its older brother, the 77mm L-1, used in such monster lenses as the 50 f/1.0 and 1200 f/5.6. "

So if you take a caliper and measure the stator you can find out which you have and seek a replacement.

Not the same lens but perhaps of some benefit. See https://www.lensrentals.com …-500mm-f4-7-7-1-teardown/ (external link)

OMG ... the complexity of RF lenses, just how much would a repair on these be?? Or do you just toss it and buy another ..
EF lenses are so simplistic compared to this!

I know this is an old thread but I really need some help with this lens ...

What screwdriver or special tool is used on the screws XA9-1052 which are shown on page 3 of the PARTS CATALOG. These are tiny screws and I do not want to damage them by using the incorrect tool.

Thanks
Victor

forum: Canon Lenses

my understanding is that most screws for Canon were "JIS" types - apparently stands for Japanese Industry Standards (see: https://en.wikipedia.org …nese_Industrial_Standards (external link) )

what size will fit is probably harder to work out, I'm guessing that a size #00 or size #000 will be needed for really tiny screws but that's really only a guess.

interestingly, if you search on internet for "XA9-1052" - it comes up with this thread: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1526143

might still be possible to order a XA9-1052 screw from Canon & go to a tools speciallist & see what driver fits best?

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
