A local camera store had a used 1DX Mark III for sale, asking $6,600 Cdn. Being in the market for a Mark III I visited the store. They had advertised 51,000 shutter actuations but when I checked the camera I discovered that there were 524,000. I did not take the camera feeling that 524,000 shutter actuations is beyond what Canon rates the shutter for. The store agreed to drop the price $4,900 Cdn but I still feel that price is too high as I will have to spend money having the shutter replaced and the camera refurbished.

Did I do right? Would anyone else have acted differently?

If $6,600 is not too much for you, then buy the camera for $4,900 (or cheaper if they will haggle further) and set aside $1,000 to have the shutter replaced and the camera fully serviced. That would still be less than $6,600 and the shutter would be new.

I actually wouldn't purchase the camera simply based on the fact that they misrepresented the shutter actuations. Perhaps it wasn't intentional, but there's no real way to determine that so I wouldn't be able to trust them to disclose any other known issues. I believe that camera is rated for like 450,000-ish clicks, so being past it's prime combined with the possible deception, I would have certainly passed.

With that being said, I have never held the shutter count in the highest regard when buying used. I've never experienced a shutter failure on any of my old cameras, and don't personally know anyone who has. Normally I'd loosely link clicks to general usage, but with the 1DX, it's very possible it was used exclusively for sports where the photographer is constantly firing off bursts. That scenario could tally up to a high number very quickly.

I'm with the poster above. A camera store better know how to check shutter actuation and display an honest number. Clearly they were trying to deceive and I wouldn't trust them. Right now there are 3 1DXIIIs at Keh a bit cheaper than your local store.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
