I need some suggestions for some kind of a software package to put on my new Windows 10 pro PC to download my pics from memory cards CF and SD. I have a 7D MK 2. My main requirement is to be able to download by Day/Date/Year the same way I have been doing for years with Canon's "zoom/image browser" I can't seem to get any updates for these programs to put over on my newer pc. I DO NOT want to use lightroom and their monthly/yearly fees. I would rather pay once and own the program.
All ideas are welcome and appreciated

EOS Utilities will do that for you, if you are still shooting Canon.

Have you looked at ImageBrowser EX? It replaced the old zoom/image browser. You can download it from the Canon site.

I've been using DIM (Digital Image Mover) since about 2000.
Its free and allows a lot of personal setting including building folders/filenames based on date time etc.

Check it out here

I use EOS utility as well. You can download it here

You might need to type in the serial number for your camera.

CC always welcome.

Likely the Canon tools above are the best route; but, I'll also throw out there that I've switched over from LR (for the same reasons you mention) to using Exposure (external link) and been fairly happy with that. It allows you to manage your files in whichever format/etc you want to and gives most of the same editing capabilities. It is currently short of some basics, like layer blending, that I find sad and baffling but not mission critical for me.
