2days after mentioning in this thread https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1526158 that I'd never seen a chafer beetle in 17 years of macro shooting, guess what turned up in the garden :)

A rose chafer.

Excellent well done. A lot of people have seen Hoplia philanthus (Welsh Chafer) this year maybe you will (I photographed it but have a big back log of photos to post).

Similar happened to me last week when I stated on the Facebook Insect forum that I hadn't seen a Stag beetle for years then next evening I found a male and the evening after a female.

It's well known that "Build it and they will come". Who knew you only have to talk about them.

Great shots. Probably a good example of your very well controlled light, great detail in the shell.

Can't claim the light was down to me- it was natural light with light cloud diffusion.

I should have realised it was natural light, background objects being similar brightness to the subject.

Sadly I haven't seen one yet. Hopefully this won't be the first year I don't find one for many years.

One problem is they seem to be more active at dusk when you are less likely to be looking.

I often just find them walking around.
