For C1 I set it to 1/2000 and f/5.6 and auto ISO then when I change to C1 when I get to the pond I then change the shutter speed and f-stop to what I want and then have the back dial for EV and use that to control the exp comp.
I had tried the enable for settings but I always want to start a 1/2000 and it often ended up 1/400th or something. C2 right now I have the same but ES. I do 90% of my shooting in C1 and change the speed (TV) and f stop (AV) as I want.

To change I use the wheel by the shutter button to spin up or down, the control ring to control F stop that I don't change much and the back wheel for EV which I manipulate all the time. always with auto ISO as the birds fly in and out of shadows or backgrounds

Cool. OK, so if you are using C1 and are on Disable, then your settings will be retained as you say. But if you change the shutter speed and so on at the pond, it will go back to the original C1 settings every time it goes to sleep. Maybe you have "Auto power off" under R7 Power saving set to a long time or to Disable.

I have power off set to 15 minutes and then if I haven't taken a picture in 10 minutes I will hit the shutter button or AF button to keep it awake but display off so it retains settings.
There have been a couple times that no birds were around for more than 15 and I forgot to keep it awake. but most of my shooting is at 1/2000 anyway

How many shots do you find you get per battery charge Jeff?

In theory day after we get back from Exmoor, 24th.

Waiting for the dispatch email, probably this evening based on Park's previous MO.

Any news on yours.

That's good to hear Lester. Fingers crossed that this is a sign of stock starting to ship, in which case maybe I shall follow soon afterwards.

I look forward to seeing your 1st R7 images.

Yes a bit frustrating, available on the first week of a two week holiday so had to delay delivery; would have been handy too.

I would estimate about 900 shots per charge, may be more. I normally sit for a couple hours at the pond shooting away and usually shoot about 600 shots and will sometimes do two sessions.

I was shocked by how much less power the R7 uses than the R5. The only time I have drained a battery yet with the R7 on a day out is when I started the day with a partially-depleted battery. During periods when I only go out with the camera for a couple hours in the cool of the morning, I can get away with one battery for 4 or 5 days. I've used 2+ batteries on the R5 in a single day.

Wow! That sounds pretty good. Not sure how many shots I am getting but not sure I am up in that range. May have to check my settings to minimize those power hungry options.

Shots, per se, only drain extra battery much when using the mechanical shutter. On a DSLR, you use both a moving mirror and a moving shutter.

With a DSLR, almost no power is used before you engage the shutter button; it's like a computer with no display sitting idle with only the OS running. So, with DSLRs, power consumption is heavily tied to the number of shots, whereas, mirrorless in e-shutter mode uses battery based more on how long the EVF is running, as it is always recording a movie and showing it to you.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Thanks for that info and reminder, John! I think recently I had switched to ES for a bit and I think that it my source of power consumption. I will switch back to Mechanical and monitor the difference. Thank you.

This has always been the worry for me with mirrorless; I tend to spend time looking through the VF waiting for a good moment.

How will MS help, the camera is still playing the movie to the VF regardless of shutter mode.
