I don't have the RF 1.4x and for now won't get it. Reasons are the very high price for what it is and the issue with the reduced range when used with the 100-500mm.

Also, I expect that cropping will give a similar result to using the 1.4x. It would be interesting to see actual tests, though, with the 800 and the 100-500mm.

Personally I would not get the 1.4. Not for BIF. With the 1.6 crop factor 700mm is plenty for that. The light loss alone. I'd use it for stills but you can crop that even more in post without it.

These were taken on different days with different lighting, so maybe not a direct comparison. Both uncropped jpgs with some exposure adjustments.

Interesting, how do you find the relative AF speed and accuracy?

Eye detect was enabled; focus area was Whole Area; servo; tracking on. Eye detect is pretty good but doesn't work well all the time. The odds improve if the eye is already somewhat sharp in the viewfinder, and if the subject isn't too small in the viewfinder. Basically, the eye should be easy for the camera to identify.

Most of my experience with these lenses has been on my R5. I got the R7 mainly for my wife and shot it enough to figure it out well enough to set up for her.

But I haven't noticed a lot of difference in AF between the two lenses. I think both are a bit slower than the bare 100-500. From the few shots I took with the 800 on the R7 I think it gets a little bit soft near MFD, but that might be the pixel density exposing flaws in my hand holding ability.

I had the 800 before I got the 100-500. I kept it even though I don't expect to use it very much. I call it my duck and shorebird lens. It's still great for a hike across the mudflats when I expect the birds to be more than 20 yards out. The lower weight is a nice feature sometimes.

Yesterday at a swim meet, the original LP-E6NH battery died so I swapped in one of my Wasabis. Sure enough, it kicked out of H+ as mentioned earlier in this thread. Looks like I'll be buying a second LP-E6NH to replace my dying Vivitar LP-E6. I don't want to have to do without H+!!

I am slowly figuring out the settings.

This black bear photo was a little harder. EF 100-400 + 2.0 teleconverter, 1/500, f/11, ISO 32,000. There was also a little bit of adrenaline flowing! lol

Nice shot. Good detail in the bear’s coat and low noise.
I think I would have needed 3 or 4 stacked teleconverters for that shot.:-)
Looks friendly enough, but what happens if the bear decides that you are lower down in the food chain?-?

I have had a second LP-E6NH on order since my R7 was delivered end of September, still on backorder.

I bought the 2x Neewer LP6-ENH equivalents from Amazon - they seem to be doing a good job so far. H+ works fine with them, and you can use the Canon charger or the USB one that comes with them.

The ShutterCount (external link) app on the macOS App Store now supports the R7.
