Red squirrel. Heavy overcast and the (hidden) sun was low in the sky.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

In low-light conditions like this, I often shoot at a too-low shutter speed and then do burst mode, in the hopes that one or two will be sharp. What I'm finding with the R7 (using electronic first-curtain shutter) is that the first shot is usually the sharpest. The subsequent images all tend to be slightly blurred. Is this shutter shock? I need to find out what's happening, because this technique is not working for me with the R7. Used to work great with the 7D2.

A while back you asked me to post a picture of the red squirrels we have here. Haven't seen one that stood still long enough to take a picture. That said, your picture could have been taken here. He just needs a lot more fur on his hands and feet.

Thanks for the comment. This one didn't sit still for long either, but I got off half a dozen shots and this one looked sharp.

Your profile says Eastern Canada. Ottawa is eastern Canada! You must be in northern Canada.

That's what people are saying. Due to the very fast fps, the shutter, light as it is, may be still vibrating slightly when it opens again 1/15th sec later. Maybe try it on H or slower, just to see whether it still happens.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

For these non-panning shots I stay on ES and found reliable results with the 100-500 down to 1/200 subject motion permitting.

Thanks, guys. It must be aftershocks from the previous shot as you say. I will do some experiments with burst speed and ES to get better understanding. Marginal light is common here and I need to know the best ways to deal with it.

Edit: Yes, ES gives better results in bursts. Will use that in the future if there isn't a lot of motion.

Now that is REAL east. And north. There must be some amazing scenes there.

I would probably say the same thing about Ottawa. Never been there. For me, here, when I go wandering around in the woods off the beaten path I always imagine I am the first person to stand in that spot. Possible here, not so much where you live.

As a good friend said, "Look at everything like you're a tourist". He was here for ten months and his camera never stopped. It was all magical to him. After being here for years and years it is still magical for me too.

Experimenting with electronic shutter. Surprise, it gives rolling shutter! Even with static subjects (but with inadvertent camera motion). Have a look at these two shots from an ES burst. In the second one, the vertical is compressed a bit. It is very obvious if you flick from one image to the other. Yes, there was camera motion. But I'm surprised to see noticeable rolling shutter under these conditions.

It is unfortunate that we have to struggle with shutter modes in this model. So...
  • Mechanical shutter is noisy and causes shutter shock.
  • Electronic first curtain in H+ gives shutter shock at lower shutter speeds in burst mode.
  • Electronic shutter gives rolling shutter effects with subject or camera movement.

Maybe I'll try EFCS in H now (instead of H+).

I noticed the exact same thing happening with rolling shutter effects occurring when I was shooting short bursts of perched birds at a local park recently. A single image posted may not be noticeable, but when I was moving through images at home on the computer, it was noticeable.

Been dabbling with video on my R7. This American Kestrel is usually quite far, so I had my 100-500 and 1.4X on. Then I tried the crop mode 4K video on the R7. So if my math is correct 2016mm equivalent. I was shocked when he landed close and almost filled the frame. I was pleased with the result.
