Been dabbling with video on my R7. This American Kestrel is usually quite far, so I had my 100-500 and 1.4X on. Then I tried the crop mode 4K video on the R7. So if my math is correct 2016mm equivalent. I was shocked when he landed close and almost filled the frame. I was pleased with the result.

Very very nice!

Experimenting with electronic shutter. Surprise, it gives rolling shutter! Even with static subjects (but with inadvertent camera motion). Have a look at these two shots from an ES burst. In the second one, the vertical is compressed a bit. It is very obvious if you flick from one image to the other. Yes, there was camera motion. But I'm surprised to see noticeable rolling shutter under these conditions.

It is unfortunate that we have to struggle with shutter modes in this model. So...
  • Mechanical shutter is noisy and causes shutter shock.
  • Electronic first curtain in H+ gives shutter shock at lower shutter speeds in burst mode.
  • Electronic shutter gives rolling shutter effects with subject or camera movement.

Maybe I'll try EFCS in H now (instead of H+).

I think if you just saw the ES shot in isolation you would not know, even together it is not that obvious - viewing on a phone however.

Correct, you would not notice it in just one shot. But it's obvious when switching back and forth between two shots. I've never seen this effect before, so it was quite the eyebrow raiser for me.

A couple of random shots with my 16mm.
It’s strange how much im using this lens, almost 100% of the time at the moment. Ive never really got on with wide lenses on either FF or crops. Hardly ever use my 11-22 on my M50, yet the R7+16mm just seem right, at least for now.

A rather novel situation today, for me at least.

After a rather chilly, but enjoyable, 2 hour hike with temperatures peaking at -2°C, I returned home to upload my images. All were .CR3. Having allowed an hour or more for the camera to return to room temperature, I removed the card and inserted into my PC's built-in card reader (as has always been my method).

Importing into Lightroom... Nothing! Browse the card in Explorer... Nothing!

Connected the R7 to my PC via a USB cable... Could then import all of the day's images.

Any idea what's going on? Does the R7 keep files in the buffer if it's cold?

Sounds like you might need a new card reader, R7 does not have that much buffer. Canon camerss flush to the card on opening the we card door anyway.

Has that card reader worked ok before with that card and R7 files?

That is not showing for me, where do you find it?

Also OS and DPP version?

Mac Mojave, DPP 4.16.11, on the first editing tab. From the top it's Brightness, WB, Fine-tune WB, Auto lighting optimizer, Clarity, Picture style, Gamma, Curves, Advanced exposure and sharpening.

It shows when the 7D2 is connected but it's grayed out.

Mojave will not support 4.17 unfortunately. I can upgrade that machine one more OS level, Catalina I think, but IIRC I will lose some other program that I like.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you have two cards in the camera, and are you sure you took out the right one?

Thanks for your input, Lester.

Sorted now! Card reader is just fine. I had 2 cards inserted. Only checked card 1, which already had just 4 images on it. The camera decided to write the latest images to card 2, and I didn't think to check that one, assuming they images had been added to card 1 as there was plenty of free space.

So, user error :-D

Does anyone have two R7's yet? I am using my R7 in about 90% of my shooting at this time (BIF and perched) and often with the RF600, I have started using my 90D as a second camera with either my 100-400Lii or 70-300ii on it next to my chair for times when the action gets too close for the R7, such as when a bunch of birds fly by. I like the 100-400Lii on the 90D but it does weight quite a bit more than the RF100-400 on the R7.
The big thing is that the controls are quite a bit different on the 90D from the R7 and in a rushed pressure situation I often mess up when grabbing the 90D.

I do love my 90D but I also love the R7. I know I should just go with what I have but I keep wondering....
