Lester Wareham Moderator ![]() More info | Jan 02, 2023 05:38 | #3786 The subject tracking is quite good but there are times it does not work, particularly when there is something close to the focus plane. If you notice this you can use an alternative focus method (fine focus point for example) to correct the focus plane after which a return to tracking might be OK. In these examples (attached in this and the following message) I could not tell in the viewfinder the tracking algorithm had grabbed the background. I thought this might be of interest. As for terminology, let us not forget that with the R6 II Canon introduced the "Digital Teleconverter" that gives us "One-touch extra reach" So after looking into what it actually is, it seems to be just what could have been two extra crop modes instead of just 1.6x (2x and 4x), but they gimmicked it up by only allowing JPEG and resampling those JPEGs to the set JPEG size, in an attempt to justify the use of the word "teleconverter" (in contrast to a proper "crop mode", an optical teleconverter maintains full pixel count).

I would use the pre-focus technique or alternate focus method as you describe it. I still prefer single point AF to get as much contrast as possible. In this case single point might be too big and could grab the foliage behind. Single and spot are bit larger in the R7 and R6II compared to the R5. Image Editing OK

The way I look at it this new tech is amazing but still in its infancy. We probably won't be having these conversations in 10 years. Yes I am wondering if I should have the fine point AF as the primary AF (AF on) and the subject tracking secondary (*), rather than the current reverse way around for this reason... I'll be re-evaluating that when I get out there and have the time to experiment in decent weather. Are you using the AF Preview (white pre-focus square) option on page 3 of the purple AF menus? I find it very handy, if it can find the eye first. Image Editing OK
