I know. I was a tad shallow. Like I said only 15 shots or so of wildlife. I took all types of shots of signs, car license plate, etc at all types of distances. All good. Even with with a really shallow DOF nothing was really in focus. I ran it through Topaz to give it a little clarity. I'm not concerned. It will be there.

Have you took some shots with a focus chart? To me that looks like back focus and if the R7 has focus adjust that can be corrected in camera for each lens.

I still of the 7D MII and I ran my lenses through focus chart to adjust the focus plane.

EDIT:
It looks like the top of the head and ears have good focus to me, which is why I am thinking it is back focus and adjustment of the focal plane could help.

ML bodies do not have Micro Focus adjustment.

I should have said it's too early to determine anything. Could have been atmospheric distortion. I need to get out and shot more. My test Santa was about 25 ft away.

The AF Micro Adjustment (AF Micro Adj.) function allows you to adjust and register an auto-focused position of an A-mount lens attached with the LA-EA2 or LA-EA4 mount adaptors.

So not for native mount lenses

It does look a bit back focussed, as you say the ear looks more in focus.

I have not had this with the R7 + 100-500, it is either pin sharp or missed it.

Were you in servo with a stationary subject?

The focus box looks tight on the eye, subject tracking or classic focus point?

The highlight of the eye seems sharp, but the fur around not.

It the only example of the subject?

Really should have got the tripod out but I was being lazy.

Servo and subject tracking with eye AF. I took about 20 shots. I can post another lately.

It would be interesting if you can see if there is any actual focus plane movement in later shots.

I find that sometimes the first shot has not settled on the focus plane as well as for latter ones....

I think it’s important to realise that DPP only shows which focus point was used and not where it actually focused! So although it looks like the camera focused on the eye, that may not be the case.

Exactly Levina, that was my point really, but said more directly.
