What memory cards are you guys running? Any UHS-II SD card? Any positive or negative experiences with any particular brand or card?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Np problems with either Sandisk or Sony Tough UHS-II cards.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

I'm running a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64 in slot 1 for RAWs and a Sandisk Ultra Plus 32 microSD in slot 2 for JPEGs. Neither are UHS-II.

I normally get Sandisk extreme but the pre-release offer included two Lexar 128GB Professional 1800x 270MB/S UHS-II V60 SDXC so I am using these. They have been fine so far.

According to the manual, there's only a small (2~10%) improvement using UHS-II for electronic shutter. For mechanical shutter it's really mixed... some image formats (like reduced-size JPEGs) have no improvement and some (CRAW) are much faster. I haven't really experienced the buffer as a big problem, but suppose using a UHS-II card would help since I shoot CRAW to one card.

Page 943 of the advanced manual.

I wonder how they measure that? AFAIK, based on my experience, the R7 just stops taking new images completely when the buffer fills, and will not shoot again until about 40% of it is written to the card, so yes, over a long period of time you can take more images with the shutter butter held down, but it won't be a new rate; it would just be due to shorter pauses. So, anyone who does not typically fill the buffer should benefit nothing from a faster write speed, except the ability to remove the card sooner after a burst is complete.

If different card write speeds affect the number of images possible in a burst, then that suggests that the camera could be squeezing in some file writes to the the card while the buffer is still filling, perhaps only when the camera detects a fast card?

I put a very, very old 4GB card capable of writes of only 10MB/s in my R7, and tied the shutter button down with a locked remote release, and it shot at exactly 30fps, always (30ms - 30ms - 40ms repeatedly, with a 10ms time resolution), except for long pauses where it shot nothing, and during the write of the last two files to the card, where the next to last took about 90ms instead of 33.33ms (system was probably checking available space exactly, rather than by approximation). So, even with a molasses-like card, bursts occurred at full speed.

I bought a card capable of only 45MB/s writes a few months ago because I forgot to bring an empty card with me, and even shooting in e-shutter at 30fps, I never felt any slowdown, because I never held the shutter down long enough to be affected by card speed. So, cards with faster writes may or may not be useful to a person for stills, depending on their own shooting habits, and file output(s) chosen.

It is very interesting that the number of images with RAW plus HQ JPEG is not much different or the same as just RAW. This could suggest that when you shoot RAW + JPEG, the camera may not actually put the JPEG into the buffer, but rather, extract the JPEG embedded in the RAW when it writes to the card. If they gave numbers for RAW plus a different JPEG quality, and less images fit in the buffer, then that would verify that theory, as the camera would have to have a separate JPEG file if the JPEG was different from the embedded one. The manual only gives numbers for fine full-res added JPEGs, though.

I use UHS-II SanDisk cards most of the time. On occasion, I'll use a UHS-I SanDisk card since I have a few lying around. I can't say I've noticed any real difference while shooting, but then I didn't do any specific tests for that. I like the improved speed when reading as I am impatient on the download to the computer :) . And, TBH, the difference there isn't huge.

I'm using one of my older cards for the R7.
(SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card V30. Read/Wrightspeed 170/90).
It works similar to my SDXC UHS-II V60 card that I use for my R5.

I'm not shooting often in 30fps, just 15fps in ES or EFCS so with short burst it's no problem at all.
I'm not going to buy any fancy V90 card because my quality V30 card works just fine for my shooting style.

I got the SanDisk Extreme Pro (from that first link I posted) for my R6II - but 64GB. It was $50 off at a local dealer.

I got this for the R7.

I know they have two slots but I've really used for other cameras. I'll be into some heavy shooting in a few weeks so I'll see.

I use Prograde UHS-II V90 cards, and have some V60 cards for extras just in case. I've never had an issue with them, and they are very consistent with their actual versus rated speeds in my own tests. Depending on what you're doing, you may not need a V90 card, but I have noticed a difference when using them in cases where I'm shooting a lot of longer strings of shots, like an airshow. They are able to write a few more images, and the buffer clears faster as well. Is it a huge difference? Probably not, but it's enough that I don't mind having a couple of them in case I want to use them.

Have been using Prograde UHS-II V90 cards in my R7, also shooting video at times, with zero problems. Don't usually shoot very long bursts, so maybe overkill for me. I started using ProGrade when I got an R5 and some folks were having problems with some of the CF Express cards of various brands.
